Justin Scharr Reveals!

Margie : September 6, 2010 3:58 pm : Community Life, Entertainment, Fundraising, HIV, Margie, Personal life, Press This, Public Health, fitness, podcasts, sexual health

Hello Muffins:

Busy and productive day as usual.  As the summer concludes and the business of Back To School and holiday planning begins I find myself in a very reflective mood.  So much has happened in the past year for which I am grateful.  One thing that occurred was the collaboration between Heres-Margie and My Scene City to bring you Mrs. Pederson’s Twin Cities Got Talent.  Justin Scharr, the winner of the talent show, stopped by this afternoon to tell me about the news in his world.  We recorded a very brief podcast to update you all.  Just under ten minutes it is a quick listen and jam packed full of “Good Stuff”!  Thanks for stopping by Justin and congrats on the new directions your life is taking.

Make it a great day everyone.

Love & Peace,

Margie

Muffins:

Last night I had the fabulous opportunity to chat with Adam Fairbanks and Sue Purchase about Harm Reduction.  They are amazingly compassionate activists who have a discernible point about needle exchange to share.  Not sure what needle exchange is or what Harm Reduction is all about?  Listen to the show and learn more!

I hope you all will spend a little time this holiday weekend crafting your perfect life.

Love & Peace,

Support is Key!

Margie : July 23, 2010 4:58 pm : Entertainment, Fundraising, HIV, Home, Margie, Personal life, fitness

Muffins:

Every once in a while the week will fly by and you will look back wondering where the time evaporated to.  This has been one of those weeks (well months actually)!  Adding back into my routine the activities of biking, weight exercises and walking has taken a toll on my limited availability.  I really appreciate all of the support people have been sending me regarding my weight loss goals and attribute that to my success in achieving my goals.

Busy though I am, I am happy to say that late last night I was able to get out and enjoy Bingo at the Bolt for a bit.  I need to tell you though that at one point in the evening it looked as though the bingo folk were going to pack it up and call an  early end to the night.  WHY?  Well consider this.  The games are first and foremost designed to be a fundraiser for the very deserving Aliveness Project.  In order for this to occur they need to sell bingo cards!

The big purse happens with game 12 and there is a requirement that in order to be able to play that game you need to have played games 10 – 12 consecutively.  Bingo begins at 9pm and generally is over at about 11pm.  The problem that almost put an end to the event last night was a poor turnout for the early games.  People have been delaying when they arrive to play so that they are there for games 10 – 12 - but this hardly seems fair to the people who put this fun event on for you.  If they don’t make the money to cover the prizes given away by selling cards then why bother?  It ceases being much of a fundraiser doesn’t it?

You are all pretty smart cookies – er, um MUFFINS!  You get the picture – show up early play all the games and maybe win a prize or two.  The night is fun and the cause is worthy.  I don’t want to sound like your mother but next week don’t show up late for the ball!

Spoken with love and peace,

Margie

Let the Games Begin!

Margie : July 22, 2010 8:24 pm : Community Life, Drag, Entertainment, Home, Margie, Personal life, Public Health, education, fitness

On Saturday May 29, 2010 at the Mismatched Game Lucy Stoole and I announced a public competition.  We have challenged each other to a healthy weight loss competition.  We are both wanting to lose 30 pounds!  Lucy’s goal is to drop that much by Labor day and mine is to lose the weight by the time I see Cher perform in Vegas on my birthday (October 2).  This was in conjunction with my signing on as the spokesperson for the Rainbow Health Initiative’s Pounds for Pride!  Pounds-4-Pride is a six month challenge campaign offered through Rainbow Health Initiative to the LGBT community.  The campaign is designed to offer support and encouragement for LGBT individuals to state and achieve their health related challenges.  I have been meeting with Dr. Rhys Preston as a part of my plan to lose the weight.  So far I have gone from 199 to 182 pounds!  I encourage each of you to look at a simple way you might challenge yourself to live a healthier life.  Hey – if I can do it – anybody can!  I even took my bike from downtown Minneapolis to my bank at Snelling Avenue & 94 and back today.

Wish us luck!

Whispers of Success

Margie : July 20, 2010 11:46 am : Community Life, HIV, Margie, education, sexual health

Although the word is not official, the rumor is out that a local AIDS Service Organization is due to receive a sizable Federal award to upgrade their HIV prevention efforts.  The staffer primarily responsible for the grant submission is Michael Lee who serves as the agency’s volunteer coordinator.  Mr. Lee has been a long time HIV prevention worker in the Twin Cities.  Prior to moving here he lived in Michigan where he attended Michigan State and eventually earned his MSW.  Lee has served on the Community Cooperative Council on HIV and AIDS Prevention (CCCHAP) since 2004.

The CCCHAP is Minnesota’s Community Planning Group (CPG) which is a federally mandated board that each state accessing federal dollars to provide HIV prevention and AIDS services is required to have in place for oversight of the distribution of funds.  In 2009 the CCCHAP began planning efforts to institute a statewide prevention strategy as it relates to HIV prevention.  TheColu.mn has reported on this effort and will continue to update as news of funding and new developments in the field emerge.  Congratulations to Lee for the positive impact he is having on the community.  For information about the CCCHAP, go to their website by clicking on the logo in this post.  For more information about HIV prevention one very reliable and up to date resource locally is the Minnesota AIDS Project.

Perhaps You've Heard

Margie : July 18, 2010 6:29 pm : Community Life, Drag, Entertainment, HIV, Home, Margie, Other Bites and Bytes, Public Health, fitness

Muffins:

I am so excited to tell you about all that has been happening over the past few weeks.  Now that we’ve made it past the Gay High Holiday of Twin Cities Pride and The Fourth of July things may simmer down a bit.  Quickly approaching the dog days of summer there is still plenty of outdoor recreation and fabulous Minnesota living ahead.  This morning marked the closure of yet another Red Ribbon Ride.

The ceremonies were held on the mall of the Minnesota State Capitol.  With riders flooding the mall at just before the scheduled time of 1:30pm the crowd – smaller than in recent year’s passed was in full support.  Only one potentially serious condition (dehydration) was treated on Saturday and all riders were able to finish what they started.  Moving speeches and tired faces were testimony that the individuals who rode, crewed, supported and encouraged were there for good reason.  HIV in Minnesota continues to rise and we need to continue the efforts of prevention and supporting the organizations that are working to educate about HIV prevention and serve those who are HIV positive, living with AIDS and all who are affected by the pandemic.

It is not too late to give to this very worthwhile charity.

On another note, I have signed on to be the official spokesperson for the Rainbow Health Initiative’s Pounds-4-Pride campaign.  You can learn more about the campaign by going to the official site.  My public challenge is with Lucy Stoole to lose 30 pounds each between Twin Cities Pride (June 28th) and October 1, 2010.   So far I have lost 14 and am feeling healthier than I have felt in years.

One last bit to report is that yesterday I had my first speaking line in an independent film.  Look for more to come from that experience.  No matter what life brings you, please take a moment to cherish it!  We learn from negative experience, grow from change and sorrow and are rewarded by joyful experiences.  Each day is a gift and a new opportunity.

Thank you riders, crew and all who were a part of this year’s ride!

Love & Peace,

Margie

And Food Just Got Fun!

Margie : July 13, 2010 6:49 pm : Community Life, Entertainment, Margie, Personal life, Public Health, education, fitness

Happy Meal

 Muffins:

Today I began a very big challenge.  Associated with my weight loss goal of 30 pounds by October 1, 2010 which I started at the last Mismatched Game as a challenge with Lucy Stoole, I am beginning an herbal detoxification program.

Lucy and I challenged each other in response to the Pound-4-Pride campaign for which I am the official spokesperson.  The campaign is a challenge for healthy LGBTQ living put on by the Rainbow Health Initiative.  Much more information will be coming to you shortly about how you can participate.  I have already shed 9 pounds since May 31, 2010 simply by making minor adaptations to my diet.

Now I have added in meeting with a personal trainer and nutrition coach.  The picture above was taken at work today.  It was indeed satisfying and left me wanting more fresh fruit and veggies.

Here’s to our collective health!

Don't you wish you could vote on his income tax?

Xochial Crash : July 5, 2010 3:07 pm : Community Life, Financial Life, Home, Personal life, Xochial, education

Hi there kiddies,

I am not one to push a political agenda as I feel that every person has a right to vote how they see fit.

However, there is someone that I have decided is need of a Coming-to-Jesus smack up-side the head. Mr. Emmer wants to change the laws in Minnesota to count tip income towards the minimum wage that employers have to pay.

Basically what he wants to do is decrease the amount of money an employer would have to pay you if you are a tipped employee. Meaning, if you wait tables, any tips you would make would be taken and counted as part of your minimum wage payment.

To Lube or Not To Lube, that is the NEW question.

Xochial Crash : June 30, 2010 4:12 pm : Community Life, HIV, Home, Sexual Life, Xochial, education, sexual health

Hi there kiddies,

For years sex educators have stated that for safer sex play you must always use a condom and lube.

Well, it seems that may not be the case now. Read the attatched article to find that not all lubes are created equal.

I thought that I should pass this info along. I found it to be very informative and interesting.

I hope that you all read this and make smart decisions regarding your sexual play.

Lubricants for Anal Sex May Increase Risk of HIV, STIs

People who used lubrication during anal sex were three times more likely to have rectal sexually transmitted infections (STIs) than those who didn’t use lube, according to a study presented at the International Microbicides Conference in Pittsburgh.

Why the increased risk? A separate study, also presented at the conference, may offer answers. It evaluated the safety of lubricants used for anal sex and found that many of them may make the body more vulnerable to STIs, including HIV. The tests found that Astroglide and KY Jelly were the most damaging lubes, while Wet Platinum and PRÉ were the safest. Results of both studies are summarized in ScienceDaily.

In one analysis regarding anal sex and lubricants, researchers with the University of California at Los Angeles looked at data from 302 men and women in Baltimore and Los Angeles. About half (147) said they used lube during anal sex. Of the 302 people, 25 (8.3 percent) tested positive for rectal gonorrhea or chlamydia.

Researchers found that 11.7 percent who tested positive had used lube, compared with 5.1 percent who did not use lube. In other words, people who used lube were three times more likely to have a rectal STI, a difference that was statistically significant. Data showed that 61 percent of African Americans used lube for anal sex, as did 40.4 percent of Latinos and 23.2 percent of whites. In addition, 56 percent of HIV-positive participants used lube, compared with 43.7 percent of HIV-negative participants. And 76 percent of all lube-using participants said they used water-based lubricant.

The second study evaluated the safety of five water-based lubes—Astroglide, Elbow Grease, ID Glide, KY Jelly and PRÉ—and one silicone-based lube Wet Platinum. Laboratory tests looked at the toxic affect the lubes might have on the epithelium, the layer of cells that act as a barrier inside the rectum.

Researchers evaluated lubes based on viscosity (slipperiness), pH and osmolarity, which is a measure of its dissolved salts and sugars. Products that are hyperosmolar have a higher concentration of salts and sugars than skin cells. As a result, they leech water out of the skin cells, which dries them out and even kills them. Isomolar lubes contain the same amount of salts and sugars as skin cells. (PRÉ was the only isomolar lube in the study.) Researchers also looked at each lube’s affect on different types of cells and bacteria.

Test results found that Wet Platinum and PRÉ were the safest, Astroglide was most toxic to cells and tissues, and KY Jelly has the worst effect on good bacteria (it wiped out an entire colony).

Researcher noted that studies in humans are needed to determine the affects of lube on HIV and STI transmission. The study was conducted at the University of Pittsburgh and Magee-Women’s Research Institute in collaboration with the International Rectal Microbicides Advocates and the Microbicide Trials Network.

The ScienceDaily article also includes results of a survey regarding pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) awareness among men who have sex with men.

Shocking!

Muffins:

Well we are definitely ramping up for an exciting Pride!  Last night The Cockpit Project hosting their pre-Pride Party in the store.

It was a fun event with a twist.  In order to obtain a beverage you needed to bear a cheek to expereince a brand new toy they have in.  It looks like a racket and as paddles go did not look very durable.  The twist is that it packs a whollup!  Instead of being smacked with it – the top simply holds it up to exposed flesh and presses the button on the side of the handle to deliver a shock!  Everyone who had a beverage in hand shared the experience. It is an interesting toy and there are many more to be found in the shop located at 2321 Hennepin Avenues South in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Magic Power Coffee: Herbal Sex Booster Poses Risk

Xochial Crash : June 23, 2010 5:41 am : Community Life, Home, Personal life, Public Health, Sexual Life, Xochial, education, fitness

Hi there kiddies,

I don’t know if any of you all are taking any of these so called “sexual boosters” but I found this little article on a sex site and thought it was worth passing along to you.

‘Consumers may assume it is harmless and poses no health risk … in fact, Magic Power Coffee can cause serious harm.’—Deborah Autor, U.S. Food and Drug Administration

A product called Magic Power Coffee, marketed for sexual enhancement, contains an ingredient that could lower blood pressure and should be avoided, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Samples purchased and analyzed by the FDA found the product contains hydroxythiohomosildenafil, a chemical similar to the active ingredient in Pfizer’s blockbuster erectile dysfunction drug Viagra.

Like Viagra, Magic Power Coffee can interact with other drugs and cause dangerously low blood pressure. That can cause the brain to be deprived of an adequate blood supply.

I strongly urge you to click on the FDA quote and read the article yourself. It is quite enlightening.

So, if any of you kiddies out there are taking any of these things, I strongly urge you to think real hard about the dangers and the risks of using these over the counter medications.
And as a good friend of mine posted recently in memory of Pride weekend approaching:During this upcoming LGBT Pride Weekend: 1. Be Proud. 2. Remember those who we’ve lost. 3. Never allow yourselves to be pushed back or down or be made to feel ashamed. 4. Educate those whose views differ from your own. 5. Love one another.

Thanks much Mr. Brown :)

Size Matters

Margie : June 5, 2010 7:10 pm : Entertainment, GLBT Rights, Margie, Other Bites and Bytes, Sexual Life, education

Hello Muffins:

Recently TheColu.mn reported that the  work of local artist, Marc DeBauch was “Too Erotic” to be displayed at the Pride Art Show.  This was met with a flurry of opinion and outrage from the LGBT community.  In response to the censorship the artist took matters into his own hands and waged an email campaign to admonish the decision publicly.  The strategy was an effective one as the initial reaction of the Director of the show was overturned.

Original Submission

Original submission

The Executive Director of the 2010 Twin Cities Gay Pride (TCGP) celebration – Dot Belstler was in communication with the artist and stated that she was not in support of the earlier decision.  Not only is the artist’s work now going to be displayed in the show – but here’s the twist, the nature of the piece going on display grew in its erotic appeal.  The artist was so infuriated with the censorship that he re-crafted one of the works he had submitted to match his original vision for the piece.  The work the show decided to display is entitled “Morning on the Balcony”.  It is the most erotic and revealing of the three pieces entered.  After the initial determination the artist gave the male nude in the piece a larger appendage – more in keeping with the work many of us are familiar with and appreciate this artist for.   Without knowledge of the rendering being altered the decision was made to have “Morning on the Balcony” in the show.  When notified of the decision, the artist explained that the work was re-crafted.  Thankfully the work is still going to be publicly displayed at the show.  Whether this is a case of public opinion creating change or not is murky.  It is encouraging, however, to think that when we use our collective voices we can influence leaders.  In this case, congratulations to the artist for not taking it lying down!  Oh – and by the way – Size DOES Matter!  See for yourself.

Safer Sex

Xochial Crash : June 4, 2010 5:20 pm : HIV, Home, Sexual Life, Xochial, education, sexual health

Hi there kiddies,

We here at Here’s Margie want you to be as informed as possible when it comes to having safe hot sex.

I found a website from Washington D.C. in response to the incredibly high HIV infection rates among Men who have Sex with Men. The site is DC Fukit.

Be forewarned! This video does include full frontal male nudity.

I know that Margie has expressed in the past a desire to spread safer sex awareness to all her muffins, and I am just trying to help her in that mission.

So, in this month of Pride, please play safe. But always have fun!

Wrap and lube it!!!

Well It's About Time!

Margie : May 19, 2010 6:03 pm : Entertainment, HIV, Sexual Life, education, sexual health

Muffins:

For some time now I have been mentioning every chance I have that ABC/Disney sells an awful lot of sex with very little mention of social responsibility.  My dear friend Gosh Alice Jones has run many a campaign when trying to hold (yet another) crown on the platform “Sexual Freedom – Social Responsibility.”  Well word must have made it up the chain to the top where the writers of Brothers and Sisters surprised me this past week !  For the season finale of the show one of the main characters was diagnosed as HIV positive (insinuated).  Although we will not know for sure until next season the storyline was interesting enough to share.  Saul (one of the two elders of the Walker clan) ends up on Facebook only to encounter some news that will no doubt change his life.  ABC excerpt from the show synopsis states “Saul takes a computer break and discovers an old flame has been living with AIDS for many years. When the subject of HIV testing comes up, Saul’s casual attitude worries Kevin and Scotty. When they push the issue, Saul gets a bit testy about being tested.”

They did a very good job with some of the details about HIV transmission and rates of increase among Saul’s demographic (men over 54 years old).  I also am very surprised that they were able to effectively communicate that late testing is a phenomena not many people understand.  In this storyline Saul has lived with HIV for more than twenty years.  This is not that common but does happen and they handled the situation effectively in the conversation between Saul and his doctor.

I am pleased to see that they took on this topic and am equally pleased that they openly introduced what will not doubt be an integral part of the plot when the show returns for its 5th season.  NOW – if we can get them to start discussing safer sex and showing the use of condoms from time to time we may actually have a socially responsible network!

Good job ABC!

Love & Peace,

Margie

The "Bromosexual"

Xochial Crash : April 29, 2010 2:01 am : Community Life, GLBT Rights, GLBT Youth, Home, Other Bites and Bytes, Personal life, Sexual Life, Xochial, education

Hi there kiddies,

I have a question for you. Do all openly gay men have to act like flaming queens to be gay?

I was reading an article at The New York Observer site tonight and was shocked at my own feelings towards this question. It seems that there is a “trend” towards gay men acting more “straight” and not as “gay”. On the one hand, it seems only natural that there would be gay men who do not “radiate gayness” as there are straight men that don’t “radiate hetero-ness”.

I find that gay-ness is very much like the rainbow. There are the red gays, those who scream “I am GAY!!!” just from the swish of their hips as they stroll down the street. Then there are the violet gays, those who scream ” I am not so GAY!”, also from the way their hips don’t swish as they stroll down the street, and there are those inbetween.
Which is better? Which is worse?
I can’t answer that as I am not one to judge how others live their lives. I can only answer that for me, I feel I am probably an orange-y yellowish. Kind of in the middle. I do not carry my gay-flame in the palm of my hand all the time, but I also do not try to hide it.

So, there, I think that is the apex of my thought. I do not try to hide being gay.

Are those who seem to not radiate gay trying to hide it? Or is it a leftover from when they were in the closet, that mask of straightness that they do not want to let go of. Or, are they really that middle of the road in mannerisms and speech that one can not detect. And if so, are they intentionally trying to act straight, albeit on a subconscious level?

I again will ask you!

So, if you want to read the entire article, I will link it here.

Leave me a comment on what your thoughts are on this.

Make no bones about it Folks – and by that I mean Muffins!

Sarah Sloane is a force to be reckoned with!  Not only was she in town briefly to deliver two well attended talks about BDSM and kink at The Smitten Kitten, but she also had the chance to give a presentation at Beyond the Boxes at the University of Minnesota.  Beyond the boxes, the first of its kind LGBTQ Mental Health conference nationally was held at Coffman Union on the campus of the University of Minnesota on Friday March 26, 2010.  Sarah is a popular expert and lecturer on kink and I was fortunate enough to not only attend her workshop at the conference but also to follow up with a podcast for Listener’s Discretion Advised.

Thanks to The Smitten Kitten and to Sarah for delighting us with several days of kink filled discussion and learning.

Ricky Martin Comes Out.

Xochial Crash : March 30, 2010 12:10 pm : Community Life, Entertainment, GLBT Rights, GLBT Youth, Home, Personal life, Public Health, Xochial, education

Hi there kiddies,

I know to most of you, this is not shocking news. But, it is welcome news.

After years of refusing to comment or deny, Ricky Martin yesterday admitted on his blog that he is a “fortunate homosexual male”.

Now, I can only guess at what he meant by fortunate in that he has had a long career doing what he loves, while also denying himself who he is.

It has taken me all night to internally digest what his coming out means to me. And honestly, it means very little to me other than that I do not feel so dirty for lusting after him for all these years…lol :)

But I can’t help but wonder what would have been different if when in 1999 (or so) when Barbara Walters asked him that question on one of her specials, if he had answered that with a yes. How would his life have changed and so many other young gay Latino boys and girls. How would his coming out have changed the face of Latin Gays and they would have had an openly gay superstar to look up to and model their lives after and seen that coming out is not this shameful and destructive decision that so many feel it is.

But alas, he did not then. But now that he has, I say Brava!

Live your life as you have always lived, just be more open and honest with yourselves kids.

OMG Muffins!

We live in such a strange and beautiful time.  When I can come from  day at the salt mines; talking about the personal escapades of various supporters; only to go out with a dear, dear friend for his birthday to see that he is ramping up to the end of a year of celibacy after a shit-hole partner cheated and left him devastated.

He has now found someone who has captured his interest and I – for one – am encouraged that Spring is indeed in the air!

I arrive home and tune into Spartacus and the first line I am impressed by is “tits, ass and cunt all seem to be without deformity – I expect you to receive his cock in you or you will see a sword in its’ place.”  Well if that is what it has come to – let the games begin!

The folly of love – especially love that dare not speak its name – is abundant in Minnesota – no doubt the world!

Look to Heres-Margie to be changing with the tides and for us to continue to bring you an irreverent yet relevant look at how we interact physically, mentally and emotionally and how we might share love and limit disease all at once.

Let the sexual revolution begin again!

Prevent acne, and stop latent HIV cells...

Xochial Crash : March 22, 2010 7:41 pm : HIV, Sexual Life, Xochial, education, fitness

Hi kiddies,

How cool does that sound?

Well, Janice E. Clements, Ph.D., Mary Wallace Stanton Professor of Faculty Affairs, Vice Dean for Faculty, and Professor of Molecular and Comparative Pathobiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine has shown this to be true.

For people who are infected with HIV, adding the acne medication minocycline to their daily drug cocktail helps to keep latent HIV cells asleep.
Minocycline does not work the same as other HAART(Highly Active Anti-Retroviral Therapy) medications do, it does not target the virus but rather it targets the pathways that activate the T-cells.

I know, sounds complicated, and it is. So, I will not try to explain it here. But you can click here to read the story yourself.

I found it to be quite fascinating.

I hope that you also will comment on this if you are taking this, or know someone who is. Or if you have HIV, take this info to your doctor and discuss this.

Anywhose kiddies, I am about tuckered out for the night.

HIV can Hide in bone marrow!

Xochial Crash : March 9, 2010 5:05 am : HIV, Home, Personal life, Sexual Life, Xochial, education

Hi there kiddies,

Did you know this? “HIV can hide in bone marrow.”  I did not. I just read this on the AP website. Kind of scary.

In the article, it has been found that HIV can hide in bone marrow and reawaken at a later time to basically reinfect you.

But, on the positive side, this means that they now can start to develop medicine that can target these specific areas and hopefully kill the HIV virus before it can re-awaken.

Click here to read the full AP article.

And, leave comments here. I want to hear what you think, and have to say about this. Especially from our POZ friends.

Hi there kiddies, read this and tell me what you think.

Las Vegas Taxi Authority Instructs Officers to Treat Gays as They Would IV Drug Users and Prostitutes

The Las Vegas Taxi Authority has guidelines for its officers on how to treat people who are potentially diseased:

Ta “And who are those people? According to the TA, high-risk groups include homosexuals, I.V. drug users and prostitutes. Former TA Officer Scott Lewis says he was floored when he read the policy manual given to him by his boss at the TA. ‘It took my breath away to read that,” he said. ‘It lumps in homosexuals and gays with drug users and prostitutes. Drug users and prostitutes as we know are criminals.’ The policy spells out that TA officers should use protective gear and gloves in the event they need to take a high-risk suspect into custody. ‘My question is, what is a homosexual? How can you tell? Would you ask them, ‘Are you homosexual?’ and then stop, as it says, for your personal protective equipment,’ said Lewis.”

LasVegasNow reports: “Late Monday, the TA informed the I-Team it approved a new policy manual in June 2007 which does not contain the offensive verbiage about gays. But, at least four TA officers were given the offending manual long after the new policy supposedly went into effect. Plus, it appears that manual is for administrative workers, not for officers in the field. Even recent hires say the old manual is still the one being handed out to employees. Taxi board member Josh Miller says he plans to investigate.”

I am thinking that Vegas needs to be boycotted, or alteast the Vegas Taxi Companies.

I really thought that this type of thinking was on the way out. This sounds so 1985 to me. My god, it is 2010. Why on earth is this kind of teaching still be allowed in schools? It must be, how else would this type of language be put into a Employee Manual?

Well, this is about all my mind can handle after just waking up a bit ago.

I am off to cleanse my brain of hate and disgust.

Xochial Crash : February 24, 2010 6:31 pm : Community Life, Drag, GLBT Rights, GLBT Youth, Personal life, Xochial, education

Hi there kiddies,

I was perusing Towleroad.com today and came across an article about another young woman who feels the need to publicly denounce gays and lesbians.

Here is the article lifted from Towleroad.com:

City of Beverly Hills Shuns Pageant Queen Lauren Ashley

A day after an interview with Miss Beverly Hills 2010 Lauren Ashley was published on FOX News in which she said she opposed gay marriage and said gays should take heed of what it says in Leviticus, the city of Beverly Hills says she is a fraud and disavows any connection with her, the L.A. Times reports:

Laurenashley “In a statement Wednesday, the city said it was shocked by Ashley’s description of herself as ‘Miss Beverly Hills.’ The city ‘does not sponsor a beauty pageant and has no association with Miss California USA,’ the statement said. ‘As such, there should be no individual claiming the title of Miss Beverly Hills.’ The city’s statement said Ashley lives in Pasadena and ‘does not represent Beverly Hills in any capacity.’ … ’We are dismayed by any potential association with the city of Beverly Hills, which has a long history of tolerance and respect,’ Mayor Nancy Krasne said….Beverly Hills said it had contacted pageant officials to determine how to prevent any future beauty contestants from claiming the title of Miss Beverly Hills.”

As you can guess, I about had heart failure after reading this. Did these little twits not learn anything from the circus show that was Prejean and the Gays last year? I guess not.  But then I followed to the LA Times article that is mentioned in the article rebuffing her claim of being “Miss Beverly Hills” and boy-ie did I get eyefull. I read the story and then I read the comments, and that is where I got my fill of support. Suprisingly there were only two comments supporting this little twit. One outright support of her; and another, while I hate to admit it, support for her right to free-speach. Her right to free speach I can not refuse her. Her right to spew hateful and wrong nonsence, that I can bash her long and hard for. But I wont. The majority of the commenters did that for me. :)

Here is what I tried to post to the comment section, but for some reason it would not allow me to, so I am posting it here:

“she is right and all you perverts are WRONG. it’s called FREE SPEACH.

Posted by: kuruc | February 24, 2010 at 02:56 PM”

Why yes, Mr. Kuruc, it is called free speach. And, why yes, she can say whatever she wants. But, when one starts to quote a document written by men, thousands of years ago as Law; it comes off a little COO-COO!! COO-COO For cocoa puffs!!!

The Bible was written by men. Pure and simple. It has been written and re-written in so many different languages by people who have interpreted those words by their life experiences, who really knows what those word were meant to say.

As some others here have posted, if you want espouse to live by the law of the bible, then you have to live by the law of the bible.

Remember that the next time you are eating Seafood. The next time you allow your wife to express an opinion outside of the home. The next time your wife goes off to work while you stay home. The next time you want to have sex with her while she is menstruating.

I hope you all have a pleasant day! :)

So, I have now said what I wanted to say, and as I ended it there, so shall I end it here

I hope you all have a pleasant day! :)

Hi there kiddies,

I was just reading an article on how Google, the worlds largest company, can now sell power. I wont go into detail about it here for I don’t think it has much impact here in the upper midwest just yet.(you can read it here tho if you want.) But it got me to read another article that was hyper-linked at the bottom about something that Margie posted about here last year. Blackle.

It seems that this little company has made it big time. Read the article here.

What is Blackle you ask? Well, it is a search engine that uses a black screen rather than the ubiquitous white screen that Google search uses. Go here to get an idea of what it looks like. Blackle

When Margie first brought this up last year, I was a bit skeptical of the idea as it was counter intuitive to me. I do not have her experience in color theory. She said that it takes more energy to create a white screen than a black screen. Now, in my mind, it would seem to take more to create black as black is the addition of all colors and white is the absence of all color, but in color theory that apparently is not the case.

So, once again I am wrong…lol (See Margie, I can admit when I am wrong. So what if it is nearly a year later…lol)

Well, I am off for the night,

Why Fight Homophobia?

Muffins:

Perhaps you have not heard about a great project submitted to the Pepsi Refresh Project so I am here to tell you about it once more.  I also would like to share a video with you and help to connect the dots.  If funded, the project “Not The Only One” will gather up the LGBT voices from around Minnesota to tell their stories.  Why?  It is a project intending to locate and broadcast rural Minnesotan LGBT voices in an attempt to reduce homophobia by sharing our collective humanity.

Unchecked homophobia is no different than any other ism (sexism, racism, etc.) and the ill effects hatred and bigotry have on our communities and our world.  Homophobia’s ill effects include increased rates of teen depression and suicide, hate motivated crime and violence, and can impact so many other areas in a person’s life.

The Trevor Project states

“Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth who come from a rejecting family are up to nine times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers (2007 San Francisco State University Chavez Center Institute).”

You Can Help!

Please watch this powerful video created by the good people behind “In The Moment” and then vote for the “Not The Only One”

Scientists Make Breakthrough in HIV Drug Research

Good Morning Kiddies!

I know I have posted about something like this before, I think I have anyway.

Via Reuters.com:British and U.S. researchers said they had grown a crystal that enabled them to see the structure of an enzyme called integrase, which is found in retroviruses like HIV and is a target for some of the newest HIV medicines.

What does this mean? Well, according to the article, it means that they have discovered where certain HIV medicines affect the HIV virus and how it prevents the virus from putting its DNA into cells.

I think that this is fabulous news. Even if it has taken 20 years to find. I hope they continue this work so that one day they can finally find the link that needs to be destroyed to end the threat of HIV forever.

Well, I am off to run some errands.

Yesterday, on ABC’s “The View”, Joy Behar notes that popular syndicated columnist, Dan Savage, throws out the idea that gay men in relationships are far more promiscuous than those men in heterosexual relationships.

While the video clip ends before the end of the conversation, both Whoopie Goldberg and Elizabeth Hassleback disagreed with Behar and Savage laying claim that it was a stereotype.

Meefers and TheColu.mn On the Rise

Muffins:

It has been just over a year since I recorded a podcast with Meefers.com (January 6, 2009) and I am happy to tell you that their success is continuing.  At the time of the podcast they were just under one year in the making and were covering five GLTBA friendly cities.

Since that time they have gone on to add 7 additional cities making their expansive reach from shore to shore an impressive feat.  Life and business partners Clayton  Ebert and Patrick Schaller certainly have been up to some good as they bring us stories and news affecting and representing the queer community from all over the United States.

Locally a similar organization began as a whisper early in the year of 2009 and is emerging as another voice of the community to be reckoned with.  TheColu.mn announced its voice officially at Twin Cities Gay Pride last June and has been growing in recognition and popularity since.

Both of these media sources are community driven and supportive of hosting community voice.  Serving as part blog, part multimedia platform and part social media platform they are accomplishing what they set out to achieve – namely – representation.  As online media sources the overheads to keep them going are minimal, so much more can be accomplished on far less.  Therefore, anticipate that both of these new kids on the block will weather the storm economically and be here to serve you for years to come.

If you haven’t had a chance to check them out yet – take a moment to taste what they are offering.  I am sure you will be glad you did!

Here’s to a new year and a fresh start!

The Opening Statement from the Plaintiffs Lawyer in the CA Prop 8 Trial.

Xochial Crash : January 14, 2010 3:06 am : GLBT Rights, Home, Xochial, education

Hi there Kiddies,
I am sure most of you have been following this, but I just stumbled upon a written transcript of the opening statement by the plaintiffs lawyer in the CA Prop 8 trial.
I was nearly movd to tears by Mr. Olson’s eloquent statements. It is what I have been saying all a long, but not in such a precise and clear way.
So, read it, and tell me what you think. I hope you all feel that this a heinous law that should never have been enacted.

Text of Ted Olson’s Opening Statement in Prop. 8 Trial – As Prepared
January 11, 2010

The federal trial over the unconstitutionality of Proposition 8 began today with an opening statement by attorney Theodore Olson, who with David Boies is leading the legal team assembled by the American Foundation for Equal Rights to litigate the case Perry v. Schwarzenegger. Opening statements will be followed by testimony from Kris Perry, Sandy Stier, Paul Katami and Jeff Zarrillo, who comprise two couples who wish to be married but who were denied marriage licenses because of Proposition 8.

After the opening statement David Boies gave the direct examination of Jeff Zarrillo and Paul Katami.

OPENING STATEMENT
(as prepared)

This case is about marriage and equality. Plaintiffs are being denied both the right to marry, and the right to equality under the law.

The Supreme Court of the United States has repeatedly described the right to marriage as “one of the vital personal rights essential to the orderly pursuit of happiness by free men;” a “basic civil right;” a component of the constitutional rights to liberty, privacy, association, and intimate choice; an expression of emotional support and public commitment; the exercise of spiritual unity; and a fulfillment of one’s self.

In short, in the words of the highest court in the land, marriage is “the most important relation in life,” and “of fundamental importance for all individuals.”

As the witnesses in this case will elaborate, marriage is central to life in America. It promotes mental, physical and emotional health and the economic strength and stability of those who enter into a marital union. It is the building block of family, neighborhood and community. The California Supreme Court has declared that the right to marry is of “central importance to an individual’s opportunity to live a happy, meaningful, and satisfying life as a full member of society.”

Proposition 8 ended the dream of marriage, the most important relation in life, for the plaintiffs and hundreds of thousands of Californians.

___________________________________

In May of 2008, the California Supreme Court concluded that under this State’s Constitution, the right to marry a person of one’s choice extended to all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation, and was available equally to same-sex and opposite-sex couples.

In November of 2008, the voters of California responded to that decision with Proposition 8, amending the State’s Constitution and, on the basis of sexual orientation and sex, slammed the door to marriage to gay and lesbian citizens.

The plaintiffs are two loving couples, American citizens, entitled to equality and due process under our Constitution. They are in deeply committed, intimate, and longstanding relationships. They want to marry the person they love; to enter into that “most important relation in life”; to share their dreams with their partners; and to confer the many benefits of marriage on their families.

But Proposition 8 singled out gay men and lesbians as a class, swept away their right to marry, pronounced them unequal, and declared their relationships inferior and less-deserving of respect and dignity.

In the words of the California Supreme Court, eliminating the right of individuals to marry a same-sex partner relegated those individuals to “second class” citizenship, and told them, their families and their neighbors that their love and desire for a sanctioned marital partnership was not worthy of recognition.

During this trial, Plaintiffs and leading experts in the fields of history, psychology, economics and political science will prove three fundamental points:

First – Marriage is vitally important in American society.

Second – By denying gay men and lesbians the right to marry, Proposition 8 works a grievous harm on the plaintiffs and other gay men and lesbians throughout California, and adds yet another chapter to the long history of discrimination they have suffered.

Third – Proposition 8 perpetrates this irreparable, immeasurable, discriminatory harm for no good reason.

I

MARRIAGE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT RELATION IN LIFE

Plaintiffs will present evidence from leading experts, representing some of the finest academic institutions in this country and the world, who will reinforce what the highest courts of California and the United States have already repeatedly said about the importance of marriage in society and the significant benefits that marriage confers on couples, their families, and the community. Proponents cannot dispute these basic facts.

While marriage has been a revered and important institution throughout the history of this country and this State, it has also evolved to shed irrational, unwarranted, and discriminatory restrictions and limitations that reflected the biases, prejudices or stereotypes of the past. Marriage laws that disadvantaged women or people of disfavored race or ethnicity have been eliminated. These changes have come from legislatures and the courts. Far from harming the institution of marriage, the elimination of discriminatory restrictions on marriage has strengthened the institution, its vitality, and its importance in American society today.

II

PROPOSITION 8 HARMS GAY AND LESBIAN INDIVIDUALS, THEIR CHILDREN AND THEIR COMMUNITIES

Proposition 8 had a simple, straightforward, and devastating purpose: to withdraw from gay and lesbian people like the Plaintiffs their previously recognized constitutional right to marry. The official title of the ballot measure said it all: “Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry.”

Proponents of Proposition 8 have insisted that the persons they would foreclose from the institution of marriage have suffered no harm because they have been given the opportunity to form something called a “domestic partnership.” That is a cruel fiction.

Plaintiffs will describe the harm that they suffer every day because they are prevented from marrying. And they will describe how demeaning and insulting it can be to be told that they remain free to marry—as long, that is, that they marry someone of the opposite sex instead of the person they love, the companion of their choice.

And the evidence will demonstrate that relegating gay men and lesbians to “domestic partnerships” is to inflict upon them badges of inferiority that forever stigmatize their loving relationships as different, separate, unequal, and less worthy—something akin to a commercial venture, not a loving union. Indeed, the proponents of Proposition 8 acknowledge that domestic partnerships are not the same as traditional marriage. Proponents proudly proclaim that, under Proposition 8, the “unique and highly favorable imprimatur” of marriage is reserved to “opposite-sex unions.”

This government-sponsored societal stigmatization causes grave psychological and physical harms to gay men and lesbians and their families. It increases the likelihood that they will experience discrimination and harassment; it causes immeasurable harm.

Sadly, Proposition 8 is only the most recent chapter in our nation’s long and painful history of discrimination and prejudice against gay and lesbian individuals. They have been classified as degenerates, targeted by police, harassed in the workplace, censored, demonized, fired from government jobs, excluded from our armed forces, arrested for their private sexual conduct, and repeatedly stripped of their fundamental rights by popular vote. Although progress has occurred, the roots of discrimination run deep and its impacts spread wide.

III

PROPOSITION 8 HARMS GAY AND LESBIAN INDIVIDUALS FOR NO GOOD REASON

Proposition 8 singles out gay and lesbian individuals alone for exclusion from the institution of marriage. In California, even convicted murderers and child abusers enjoy the freedom to marry. As the evidence clearly establishes, this discrimination has been placed in California’s Constitution even though its victims are, and always have been, fully contributing members of our society. And it excludes gay men and lesbians from the institution of marriage even though the characteristic for which they are targeted—their sexual orientation—like race, sex, and ethnicity, is a fundamental aspect of their identity that they did not choose for themselves and, as the California Supreme Court has found, is highly resistant to change.

The State of California has offered no justification for its decision to eliminate the fundamental right to marry for a segment of its citizens. And its chief legal officer, the Attorney General, admits that none exists. And the evidence will show that each of the rationalizations for Proposition 8 invented by its Proponents is wholly without merit.

“Procreation” cannot be a justification inasmuch as Proposition 8 permits marriage by persons who are unable or have no intention of producing children. Indeed, the institution of civil marriage in this country has never been tied to the procreative capacity of those seeking to marry.

Proposition 8 has no rational relation to the parenting of children because same-sex couples and opposite sex couples are equally permitted to have and raise children in California. The evidence in this case will demonstrate that gay and lesbian individuals are every bit as capable of being loving, caring and effective parents as heterosexuals. The quality of a parent is not measured by gender but the content of the heart.

And, as for protecting “traditional marriage,” our opponents “don’t know” how permitting gay and lesbian couples to marry would harm the marriages of opposite-sex couples. Needless to say, guesswork and speculation is not an adequate justification for discrimination. In fact, the evidence will demonstrate affirmatively that permitting loving, deeply committed, couples like the plaintiffs to marry has no impact whatsoever upon the marital relationships of others.

When voters in California were urged to enact Proposition 8, they were encouraged to believe that unless Proposition 8 were enacted, anti-gay religious institutions would be closed, gay activists would overwhelm the will of the heterosexual majority, and that children would be taught that it was “acceptable” for gay men and lesbians to marry. Parents were urged to “protect our children” from that presumably pernicious viewpoint.

At the end of the day, whatever the motives of its Proponents, Proposition 8 enacted an utterly irrational regime to govern entitlement to the fundamental right to marry, consisting now of at least four separate and distinct classes of citizens: (1) heterosexuals, including convicted criminals, substance abusers and sex offenders, who are permitted to marry; (2) 18,000 same-sex couples married between June and November of 2008, who are allowed to remain married but may not remarry if they divorce or are widowed; (3) thousands of same-sex couples who were married in certain other states prior to November of 2008, whose marriages are now valid and recognized in California; and, finally (4) all other same-sex couples in California who, like the Plaintiffs, are prohibited from marrying by Proposition 8.

There is no rational justification for this unique pattern of discrimination. Proposition 8, and the irrational pattern of California’s regulation of marriage which it promulgates, advances no legitimate state interest. All it does is label gay and lesbian persons as different, inferior, unequal, and disfavored. And it brands their relationships as not the same, and less-approved than those enjoyed by opposite sex couples. It stigmatizes gays and lesbians, classifies them as outcasts, and causes needless pain, isolation and humiliation.

It is unconstitutional.

I have to mention that I lifted this directly from the American Foundation for Equal Rights website.

Hi there Kiddies,

I know, it has been awhile since I posted, but have been busy with the holidays and such.

I was persuing the BBC web site the other night and came across this headline. It intrigued me so I clicked on it and read the attached article, and let me tell you, I was blown away.

What these researchers have possibly discovered is incredible, but you need to read it yourself as I am a bad story reteller. Lol.

Click the link at the top of the page. This discovery has so many potentials down the road that I for one will be keeping an eye out for any more information that comes out of this.

I also wanted to wish you all a Happy, Healthy and Safe New Year.

Gay Chelsea Storefront Featuring 'Live Massage' Shut Down by NYPD - Towleroad, More than gay news. More gay men

Gay Chelsea Storefront Featuring ‘Live Massage’ Shut Down by NYPD – Towleroad, More than gay news. More gay men.

Hi there Kiddies,

I really do not understand some narrow-minded people. Oops, there is the problem: narrow-minded.

When I first read about this a week or so ago, I thought to myself, “Self, would you want to see erotic massage in a store front window?” While on a basic level I thought, ee-gads no. But, then I thought why not? There has been plenty of women giving massage in windows, why not show a man giving a massage to another man as long as there is not overt-sex going on. I mean, what is the problem? Right?

Well, apparently there was a problem. Some breeder was walking by the window with his son and got bothered by the goings on. From what I read in the article, hyperlinked at the top of the page, there was no sex going on, just a masseuse giving a massage to another man. But this guy was so upset that he rushed home as to avoid exposing his son to the images, and called the police to report it.

There was no citation or summons issued, just a cop telling the display that they had to stop. No reason was given either as to if they were breaking any laws. Just that they had to stop. So they did.

The owner of the shop however is upset. He now feels that the police are going to be “watching” his shop like they did a few months back the video stores where they arrested men coming out of the store on prostitution charges.

Anywhose, I think that the idea is a brilliant one, promoting a website by showing what they have to offer, and titillating all at the same time.

So, kids, do you think there was anything wrong with this?

If so, let know what you think.

I don’t know and will have to do a little investigation and find out.

Again, I will have to do some investigating to find out.

Muffins:

I just finished watching “Prayers For Bobby” starring Sigourney Weaver on Lifetime.  This was my second time watching it and I did not weep any less.  Each time I have watched the film I am reminded of the pain I felt when I first read the book.  My pain was not for Bobby, the young homosexual son of Mrs. Griffith.  My pain was for her loss of so many things including the ability to love and know her son while he was still alive.  There is also the pain for knowing how deep felt her betrayal by her church must have been for her.  Though I am happy to know that in the end she was able to come around and understand that Bobby was normal and deserving of love, I am still saddened for all those individuals who are in her situation and for whom the choice to love their son or daughter may be taken away in the same manner.  The rejection so many GLBT identified youth feel is so strong that the rates of suicide are far greater for that population.  The film ends with the quote “Before you echo ‘Amen’ in your home or place of worship, think and remember…a child is listening.” spoken by Weaver portraying Griffith at a city hall meeting seeking to sanction a gay freedom day for her town of Walnut Creek.  The measure is not successful but you can see that it was the pivotal moment releasing Griffith from all that pain of homophobia and shame she had learned from her church.  I like to end my posts with Love & Peace and the reason for this is I believe we can manifest destiny in the Universe.  Actions beget similar actions.  The love and accept is far easier than hatred and disapproval yet it is not the choice of so many.  I hope you will take the time to watch the film if you have not yet seen it.  Better, read the book.  Then challenge yourself to love beyond your upbringing, your reason and your learned convictions.  I recently started a new channel of podcasting with a number of my dear friends.  I named the channel “Listener’s Discretion Advised”.  Although the point of the title is to warn people that we are unapologetic for crass and crude but honest discussion about a host of topics – today the title has another meaning for me.  I want to share the concept with all of you who pay way to much attention to the ignorance and hatred spewed forth by what too many congregations and religious leaders condemning homosexuality.  Listen with you hearts and renounce their ignorance.  You will be far less likely to negatively impact the lives of the youth around you – and believe Mary – they  listening.

Thanks Ms. Weaver for your brilliant portrayal and thank you Lifetime for airing this important show.  Most of all, thank you Mary Griffith for being a thoughtful and introspective pioneer for human rights.  I am deeply saddened by your loss and encouraged by your convictions.

Career & Money - Part 8: Making the Most of Your Career

Pay It Forward : September 15, 2009 5:46 pm : Steven Hintz, education

Now that you’ve either landed the job or started your own business you need to make the most of it. Even if you’ve been in the same job a long time and still love it, there is no time like the present to make sure you are maximizing your pay, benefits, and time off.

Whether you are an entrepreneur by trade or not, you need to take an entrepreneurial maximizing mindset if you want to make the most of your career. I’ve said this many times before but it bears repeating: even if you work for an employer, you are the CEO of You, Inc. and are the primary person responsible for your success. With this comes the responsibility of:

* investing in your personal and professional growth (education and more)
* staying current in your field or acquiring skills and training for a new field
* getting paid what you’re worth
* securing sufficient time off for personal pursuits and vacations
* funding your retirement
* knowing and capitalizing on benefits

The nice thing about this list is it is a good road map to follow whether you work for someone else or are flying solo. While the steps to implement may look different, the principles remain the same. Let’s take a high level look at each of these areas.

Investing in YOU

There is no better investment you can make than your own personal development. While there are no real hard and fast ROI figures for personal and professional development in general, it is a proven fact that incomes rise as the level of completed education rises. Dramatically, the salary difference between someone with an Associates Degree compared to someone with a Bachelor’s Degree was 64.9% according to 2003 Census Data. And this is just an example of formal education.

Let’s face it, lifetime learners are bound to earn more over time simply because their skill sets and talents are always evolving. In today’s environment you need to be able to learn and turn on a dime in order to adapt to changing technologies and environments. And, if you think hard skills are the only “real” worthwhile pursuits, consider the fact that soft skills are even more important to your opportunities for success. If you can’t communicate, relate, and empathize with the people you work for and with (that includes clients and customers too) you will go nowhere fast. At the very least you’ll find yourself in a dead end street trying to hang on. Ask any technology professional who only wanted to know how to code (let’s say COBOL) and now sees his/her job being performed overseas. If you don’t have other marketable skills and strong people skills you will quickly find yourself in the ranks of the minimum wage worker.

Investing in you also applies to the fun stuff. Learning a hobby or doing deep personal work falls into the same category of success (and happiness) enhancers. Things you learn about yourself while “off the job” can be as beneficial or even more so to your future than the more conventional educational paths, so don’t discount their true value.

Staying Current

Staying current is a combination of investing in you and simply being aware. Stay abreast of trends and developments in your chosen profession. Read, read, read, and then read some more – both online and offline. Interact with other people who do what you do. Volunteer for projects that excite you even if they have nothing to do with your current job. You never know where your next connection or opportunity may come from. My entire grant/development writing career came about as a result of me complaining about a piece of software on a technical forum. The editor asked me to write some influential language and that he’d pay me. That was 14 years and many grants ago. In addition, this resume item of “successful grant/development writer” helped me stand out amidst many candidates when I was applying for development jobs years ago. My point is to explore things that interest you and don’t be afraid to draw attention to these unique attributes in resumes, cover letters, and marketing materials. It helps answer the “why should I hire you?” question from both employers and potential clients.

Getting Paid What You’re Worth

Goodness knows I could write books about this one. Bottom line is that you deserve to be paid what you are worth and you need to negotiate and create the earnings you desire. It may look like changing jobs, negotiating with your current employer, raising your fees, starting a side business, or creating passive income streams. There is more than one way to create the flow of money into your life.

If you are working for an employer, you need to know what they going rates are for the type of job you do. Use one or more of the following salary sites to help you do that: Salary.com, Salary Expert, and Pay Scale. If you’re not making what your peers are based on experience and geography, it is time to do some negotiating. Even if you are earning a comparable salary, if you bring great results to your organization there’s no reason why you can’t earn more than the average. If you’re not happy with the pay (and other aspects of your job since pay isn’t everything), changing jobs can also be financially lucrative. Just be sure you aren’t simply chasing money because that is a recipe for unhappiness.

If you own a business take a look at how you charge for your products and services. Value based fee setting is the way to go because competing on price is a sure way for more stress and money struggles. You are not Wal-Mart, nor should you try to be. Instead charge for the value of what you offer — what is solving the customer’s problem worth to them? Most importantly, don’t put yourself on sale.

Two other great ways to earn more money is to start a side business while you are employed and to leverage passive income streams. Starting a side business is pretty self-explanatory, but what do I mean by passive income stream? I mean any way you can earn money with either minimal effort or an initial investment of time up front that then yields dividends without any additional time investment (think- creating an information product and selling it online). If you have expertise in an area, that information is valuable to someone else, so consider getting paid for that expertise!

Time Off

If you’re working for someone else, the more time off you get paid for, the better off you are. I have always felt that time is far more valuable than money and would go to the mat for vacation and personal time. You can always make more money, but you cannot create more time. We all get the same amount – 24 hours in a day. And, our lives are defined by how we spend our time and who we are not how much money we make. Always negotiate for time and flexibility (remote work, flexible hours, etc.). Remember that your bargaining power is greater before you actually accept a job. When I accepted a position at a Fortune 100 company, I made the mistake of not negotiating strongly enough for an additional week of vacation that I deserved based on the company’s policies and my work experience. I backed away after their first “no”. I regretted it for two years.

If you own your own business you must factor in ample time off into your time and money projections. What’s the point of being your own boss if you become a bigger jerk than the one you left at the office? While you will work hard flying solo, you need to relax just as tenaciously. Factor it into your fee setting and price your work accordingly so you can and do take “paid” vacations. Believe me, when you step away from working so hard in the business, (paradoxically) more business will flow to you. It is part of the law of attraction and self-care is a vital piece of that.

Funding Retirement

As I see it retirement is different than it is portrayed by so many employees. To me sacrificing my life in the hope of getting to “really live” for just a few years late into my life is not what it’s all about. Instead, retirement is about planning for your financial future by making the most of the present while socking money away for future needs when you might not want or be able to work or earn as much. The new retirement is more about shifting priorities and trying new things rather than sitting on the couch or playing golf all day. By the time those of us in our 30’s reach retirement age (whatever the hell that will mean in official government speak by then – 80?!?) it will be a whole new ballgame. You cannot rely on anyone or anything (the government, employers, inheritances) to provide for you. You need to create it for yourself.

That being said, I don’t believe you should sacrifice enjoying life now for some nebulous long term financial goal. Be smart, save for the future, and maximize your investments; then let go. Whether you are employed or work for yourself you need to take advantage of financial vehicles like tax advantaged accounts (401K’s, 503B’s,IRA’s, SERP’s, etc.) as early as possible and be disciplined about consistently saving. Never miss out on a company match (why kiss away free money?) and don’t treat your retirement savings as a piggy bank because withdrawals can be penalty ridden and more costly in the long run than you know.

Maximizing Benefits

Remember that big fat book your employer handed you on your first day on the job that you threw in a drawer or that drab benefits website that you never visited? Well, now is the time to look at the details because most companies allow you to make new benefit selections annually or after a “life changing” event. Of course as GLBT folks we tend to have less “life changing events” according to the law because of our inability to marry, but the strategies remain the same regardless and if your company offers domestic partner benefits you may be entitled to “almost” the same benefits as your married counterparts.

I already talked about the importance of getting the full company match on your retirement contributions, but your company might offer benefits like medical spending accounts or dependent care accounts which you shouldn’t miss out on. Both of these accounts are tax advantaged ways to pay for necessary expenses related to health care and dependent care. What happens is you contribute money pre-tax to the accounts and then get that money back when you submit receipts for qualified expenses. The only catch is usually you can’t carry over money in the accounts from one year to the next so you need to do a good estimate of your expected expenses or you could lose money. Other benefits such as life insurance, disability insurance, and other company sponsored goodies are often available as well. The most important thing is that you know what is offered, understand the details, and make it work for you to the maximum benefit possible.

If you are self-employed you are in the driver’s seat for selecting and paying for your benefits. That’s the good and bad news. In most cases you will need to augment your health and other insurance with “spending accounts” to cover expenses not covered in high deductible or limited coverage policies. In addition, you need to tend to other details that are often automatically handled by an employer like disability, life insurance, estimated tax payments, and more. Find yourself a good small business advisor and related service professionals to help guide you through. Organizations like the National Association of Self-Employed (NASE) are great as well as alumni associations and professional business groups. Ask trusted colleagues who are successful over the long haul for recommendations as well. As with anything, do your due diligence because common practice is not always the best practice.

So, make the most of it! And next time I’ll talk about what to do when the current status quo just isn’t lighting your fire anymore.

"Men At Play In Afgrabistan" Does this shock you?

Xochial Crash : September 15, 2009 12:23 am : GLBT Rights, Xochial, sexual health

Hi there kiddies,

As I was perusing the web tonight, I came across this little article on OUT.com‘s website.

I read it and was once again reminded of what a small minded and narrow thought process our country has.

I have always been annoyed with the thought that it is perfectly ok to show two women making out and playing with each other on tv, but heaven forbid if you show two men doing the same thing.

I really do not understand what the hell what goes on in my bedroom really has to do with what goes on in your bedroom. I honestly don’t give a rats ass who you fuck. Or who fucks you. Why should it matter whom I have sex with? The only person it really should matter to is myself and whom I invite into my bedroom.

It really is time for this nation to stop focusing on what happens behind closed doors.

I had a similar discussion with my mother not long back and tried to understand from her point why the party of her choice is so much better than the other one. I tried to point out that as far as I could tell, that party was nothing more than a party of hypocrites. All they seem to care about controlling what happens in my life by saying that I am not the same as they are and deserve less rights than they do.

Anywho, what I was trying to say here is that as a nation, we have bigger issues to focus on other than who is fucking whom. If your going to throw stones, you had better make sure that your not living in a glass house first.

On the Eve of LDA

Muffins:

This is indeed an exciting day for the ole P!  I have been busy on the horn confirming details and the line up for the pitch (tomorrow) of Listener’s Discretion Advised.  We did a pilot a number of months back on Mrs. Pederson’s Podcasting Fabulosity (actually it was more like a show with Miss Cee Cee Russell which was a little bawdier than I normally would air on my channel) that received favorable reviews.  Since that time I have been chatting with a number of people (and have put up a few more shows catering to that type of audience – and you KNOW who you are) who have indicated they want MORE MORE MORE!

Well, I am no one to challenge an audience so you will soon be getting it.  More that is.  More crass, more ass and certainly more sass!

Stay tuned as we launch the new show and I get to reclaim my original intent for the first podcast.  I sure hope some of you will from time to time take a moment to listen in on the show that started the mayhem (no compromising intended Minneapolis Gay Rugby bois).

Here’s to Cheers & Jeers!

The Big Gay Kiss

Margie : July 26, 2009 11:20 am : GLBT Rights, Home, education

chris__dale.jpgMuffins:

Every once in a while I am reminded that I have managed to surround myself with amazing people.  Individuals who are not only committed to change but who also will take risks and stand up for what they believe in when the odds are against them.  Last Thursday at Peavey Plaza in downtown Minneapolis a small group gathered to take action against hate motivated actions that occurred during 2009 Gay Pride festivities here in the Twin Cities.  I first heard about the violence and verbal assault experienced by a gay man after leaving the parade from a dear friend of mine who witnessed the attack.  I have not had much chance to follow up since then but was able to make it to The Big Gay Kiss that was staged as a public demonstration last Thursday July 23, 2009.  KSTP Channel 5 News covered the action in their 10 pm news that night and in their report they announced that the City of Minneapolis police have in essence closed the case citing that it did not meet the “threshold” for further investigation/action.

WHAT!?  Really!?  It is OK for hate motivated individuals to stone a person in Minneapolis?  I don’t think this should be left to lie.  If you have something to say or opinion about this situation please comment here or write to your favorite source to ask your own set of questions.  This definitely has me concerned and thinking about the safety of all of my LGBTA friends and family.  I say ENOUGH!

One of the suggested places I encourage my readers to provide comment is at TheColu.mn.

Let’s be the voice of zero tolerance!

Once again I will close with my mantra LOVE & PEACE.  Let’s make it a reality.

The Weekend Was A Blur...

vid-shot-kendra.jpgMuffins:

This past weekend had so many amazing things occur that I was swept away and am just nowing settling a bit to recap.  Friday night was the Hips ‘N Lips Drag Show down at Rumours in Saint Paul.  Those ladies served it up for us and it was so nice to see (and hear) TiNea back up on the stage.  If you’ve not yet been to one of these shows you really should try to take one in.  Yesterday was the final competition of One Man Minneapolis and what any incredible show it was.  I just visited with Erin Schwab a couple of hours ago about the technical difficulties experienced during one of her segments of the show and we laughed over what could have been avoided if the tech crew whould have known there was a performance going on… You will be able to read more about the show on Meefers.com.

This morning was the closing ceremony for the Red Ribbon Ride and it was an emotional ending to what was a great ride.  I chatted with many friends who were either riders or crew for this year’s event and they all should be so proud!  Congrats to everyone who participated in the ride this year.  I mean EVERYONE; from the donors, to the supporters, to the riders and crew.  It was especially nice to also see Kari Mitchell, Executive Director for The Hartford Breast Cancer Ride and former Executive Director for The Red Ribbon Ride present to lend support.

As Always Muffins – Love & Peace

Why are some of the most open minded countries allowing this

Xochial Crash : July 18, 2009 6:59 pm : Public Health, education

Hi there kiddies,

I was perusing my usual sites for info to post and I came across this little tid-bit: Child sex abuse internet filtering system questioned . Now why does this healine intrigue me? Well, glad you asked.

This technology that the Countries of Great Britain and now New Zealand have employed utilizies filtering to automaticly block any unwanted sites from showing up on the internet for anyone based in their country. While I feel strongly that Child Porn is wrong, and other sites that encourage this practice, I have a strong feeling that these companies that are incharge of creating these lists could exorcise their own moral codes and start to block what ever they feel like. And as the article states, the Gov’t of NZ enacted this system very much under the radar just so there would be no public discourse on the use of this technology. That is wrong. That is a Gov’t that feels its citizens are not inteligent enough to be trusted to understand what was trying to be done. This smacks of Bush/Cheney pushing the WMD in 2003 just so Bush Baby could finish what his father could not in the 90′s.

Anyway, back to the subject. For as much as we decry our own country for being backwards in its attitudes towards sex, I am so glad that we are feirce defenders of freedom of choice.

Ok, so I am sure by now that your dying to read the article yourself, and please, do so. You can click here to read it as it was written on TVNZ.co.nz .

And as always kiddies, comment comment comment.

Well tomorrow is the big day – over 250 riders and countless crew to support them will head off on their bicycles to raise much needed money and awareness for HIV prevention and AIDS services.  I wish that I would have been able to join in this year’s ride but unfortunately age has played a factor in my ability to participate.  I am there with each of you in spirit and send my love, peace and joy along with you every inch of your journey.

The power in this annual event is huge!  Not only in the ability to accomplish its mission, but in the amazing opportunity to connect people.  Some of the best friends I have are people I have met in conjunction with the Red Ribbon Ride.  Please be safe everyone!  Watch out for one another and cherish the opportunity to be out riding or crewing.  I hope to be in the saddle again next year and will see you all at Friends and Family night in Northfield.

Get a good night’s sleep and enjoy the ride!

Why?

Margie : July 12, 2009 11:34 am : HIV, Public Health, education, sexual health

silencedeath.jpgOK Muffins, so yesterday I put up a brief post about a link to a powerful video that was sent to me by a friend.  The video is from sidaction.org; a French website aimed at HIV awareness and prevention.  If you don’t read French you can easily translate much of the site through Yahoo’s Babel Fish.  The video is very powerful and is under one minute in length.  Please help me spread the video to all who are sexually active, no people who are sexually active, are thinking about being sexually active or may at some point in their lives be thinking about being sexually active.  You see it’s like this…

HIV is transmitted – we give it to each other.  I am amazed at the number of people who have commented lately that they just don’t see HIV as an issue now (WHAT NOW - as opposed to when?).  HIV does NOT need to be spread – we know how it is transmitted.  In the world of information I ask each of you to do just one thing – communicate!

If you are sexually active - know how STIs and HIV are transmitted and take action to protect yourself and those you fuck (or who fuck you).  Simple – there I said it!

Then consider a three point plan:

  • Test for STIs and HIV
  • Learn about safer sex as it applies to your lifestyle
  • Tell you doctor about the sexual health risks you engage in

We can all do our part to support those living with HIV and AIDS and also to stop the transmission to people who are not infected.  Maybe it’s time to re-engage some of the strategies employed in the early days of the epidemic by organizations like ACT UP.  One of their more popular slogans was Silence=Death.

Your voice is important.  Use it!

Love & Peace

Every once in a while a good pal will forward on a link that is truly worthy of investigating.  Thanks Jody for sending me this one.  When you dig into the site a little bit and get to the video section (It does take some digging – I will warn) you wil come across to videos well worth the time.  I have put one up under Good News for you to watch there.

Even though the video is in French it contains Strong Prevention Messaging!

panorama.JPGSorry for the pause in my contributions Muffins.

Since Pride I have been trying to get caught up with all of the fabulous things, people and projects in my life.  Thank goodness for the girls (Xochial and Moisha) to keep the wheels a’turning.  So many things are happening behind the scenes these days that I am excited to be unveiling in the near future.  This weekend will be a catch up for me and I will be putting up content from Pride as well as linking you to some amazing things happening in our own backyard.

For today, I wanted to share with you an article I wrote earlier this week for Meefers.com.

Next week is the Red Ribbon Rideand there are still plenty of riders who need your support.  This year more than ever a contribution of any size is more than welcome.  Your gift today will help to ensure that the organizations benefiting from the ride will be able to continue their amazing work with people with AIDS and in the areas of prevention and education about HIV.

Love & Peace,

Is “Delayed Condom Application” Leading to HIV Transmissions?

Xochial Crash : July 4, 2009 12:45 pm : HIV, Public Health, Xochial, education, sexual health

Editor’s Note:

This post contains an explicit image relevant to the content.  If you are under the age of 18 or are offended by explicit images do not read on.  For those of you who are interested in HIV and STI risk reduction – I hope you find this post informative

Thanks Xochial for taking the time to once again enlighten our readers!

Margie

Hey kiddies,

Do you know what this headline means? I didn’t until I read the article it was attached to? (Which you can read by clicking here)

pa290104.JPGDelayed Condom Application is when the insertive partner starts to have sex with a partner, then after a few minutes or so, decideds then to put a condom on. Well, if you have already let the horse out of the gate, you might as well ride him bareback now! Too late to put the saddle on now.

By not putting a condom on beforephd.gif you have inserted your penis into your partner, you have already exposed yourself to whatever funk your partner may have! If you practice safer sex all the time, this should be a no brainer. You wrap it before you stick it in. But it still seems that there are some of you, who claim to practice safer sex exclusively, yet still engage in unsafe practices like this.

So, please kiddies, always always always wrap it up before you stick in.

Well, that is my sermon for this holiday weekend. I will now get down from my soap-box. Have a Happy and Safe 4th of July Weekend.

Cops Bust Cruisers in Minn. Suburbs

Xochial Crash : June 26, 2009 5:10 pm : HIV, Home, Public Health, Xochial, education, fitness, sexual health

Hi there Kiddies,

I want to stress to all of you readers that having sex is a good thing. Having safer sex is even better. So, in this day and age when there is mass communication about anything and everything you could possibly be interested in, why are people still engaging in risky behaviours? For the thrill, I think. Because it is a no-no? I don’t know.
I was cruising one of my fav haunts today looking for fodder to post and I came across this little gem of a headline:

Cops Bust Cruisers in Minn. Suburbs.

I read the article and then started to read some of the comments that were left about it, and I kept asking myself: Why? Why do gay men in particular still seek out this kind of risky business. I get the thrill and rush of the possibility of being caught. I understand that. But why expose yourself to all the nasty little critters that could accompany said risks when there are so many easier places and ways of hooking up. And much safer ways. Craigs List, Squirt.org, Manhunt.net. All of these places provide a quick way for guys to hook up for fucking and getting off. And, there are many free access places to be able to get online to get your fix. I know The Saloon Bar provides a small number of computers for its patrons to use while there, and 99% of the time that I have passed these computers all that is being viewed is porn and hookup sites. I would think that for the price of a cocktail, it would be worth it to be able to safely hookup with out the need to spend the night, or more, in jail for indecent exposure.

So, as this weekend is the Big Gay Christmas Party, as I read somewhere how Margie descibes it,  Please don’t fuck it up by having to spend it in jail because you could not control your sexual appetites kiddies. We are all adults and we all have the ability to define what is appropriate and safe.

As always, please comment comment and tell me what you think.

Take care, and be safe this weekend…

Happy Pride Twin Cities!

Margie : June 26, 2009 7:14 am : Drag, GLBT Youth, education

fruitbowl.jpgWell Muffins – we are back full circle to another Twin Cities Gay Pride (or as I like to refer to it Gay Christmas!)

This year there are so many new and interesting things at the festival.  If you are a biker you can “Park” your bike in a secured area for $1 (the horse shoe area at Loring Park) and make your experience greener.  The festival also has designated picnic areas that are non-smoking and family-friendly.  The addition this year of the Healthy Living Area is a welcome development and of course all the same vendors and exhibitors that make our Pride celebration one of the largest in the Country will be there to welcome you.  Tonight – for those of you who are looking for a family-friendly and substance free event – come on over to Elsie’s Bowl for the Fruit Bowl.  I will be the emcee and look forward to seeing many of you at the event.  If you are looking for additional less publicized events and activities check out The Homosexual Agenda a nifty tool put out by TheColu.mn

I’ll see you at Pride!

Career & Money - Part 7: Starting Your Own Business

Pay It Forward : June 22, 2009 4:14 pm : education

In the last few articles in this series I focused on finding and landing the job. This assumes that after taking a deep look at your values that working for someone else is what you want. For some people, the only way to career success and happiness is being their own boss.

Whether you call yourself an entrepreneur, freelancer, solo-preneur, owner of a home based business or something else, the one thing in common is – you are your own boss. You are responsible for your own destiny — succeed or fail — in a way you never could be working for someone else. There is so much to learn that you will never know all that you need to know. That is the good and the bad news.

The main components to getting started based on my personal experience are as follows:

1) Am I Cut Out for This?
2) Getting a Plan
3) Forming your business
3) Working the Plan & Finding the Funding
4) Creating Your Support Team
5) Getting Clients
6) Managing the Business (systems)
7) Ongoing Learning
8) Revisiting and Revising

Am I Cut Out for This?

Owning your own business is not for everyone and certainly not for the faint of heart. Every day that I work in or on my business I realize this truth. Yet, what separates the success stories from the failures has more to do with WHO you are than WHAT you know. (It’s funny, but I find this truth to be pretty darn applicable in all areas of our lives.) If you’re not sure what I mean, check out this article “Are You Cut Out to Be Your Own Boss?” by small business expert Karyn Greenstreet .

If you’re anything like me you may get hung up on beliefs like

  • “If I want to own my own business I’ll have to work 24 X 7″
  • “You can’t enjoy what you do, have free time, and make a lot of money”
  • “Being in business is risky”

Or, you might find other mind chatter that keeps you paralyzed with inaction. In today’s world, however the route to business owner is far different than it was years ago and many of those old myths need not apply. Check out these “8 Outdated Notions of Entrepreneurship” to see if you’re stuck with some outdated belief that is keeping you stuck.

If you’re still not sure, go back to my tips on Life Planning because that is the root from which all your choices grow. If you just know it is right for you, but are scared and feel all alone, visit Escape from Cubicle Nation it is like a virtual lifeline for corporate employees starting their own business.

Getting a Plan

There are two types of entrepreneurs: those with a plan and those flying by the seat of their pants. Don’t let the thought of planning your business paralyze you. Whenever someone says the words “business plan” people’s blood stops circulating in their veins and they make all sorts of excuses as to why they don’t have time to plan (after all, they are so busy doing stuff, right?). You probably wouldn’t dream of planning a vacation several states away without using a map so what makes you think you should trust your livelihood and future career success to chance? Doesn’t make sense.

That being said, a business plan doesn’t have to be a mammoth document full of minute details. Unless you are going after loans, financing, and venture capital (in which case they have specific financial requirements that need to be included in your business plan), you can do solid planning in just a few pages. Think of it as the cliff notes for your business — it captures the most important details and creates a workable document without every long, drawn out detail. The best resources I have found and personally use are the Passion for Business resources for creating both your business plan and your marketing plan. Start with the article “What Should Be in Your Business Plan?” and build from there.

Perhaps the best business book you can ever read would be “The E-Myth Revisited” by Michael Gerber. This book gives you all the information you need to know why small businesses don’t work and what you can do about it so you don’t become a failure statistic. It is guaranteed to shift your mindset.

Forming your business

What type of legal entity do you want your business to be? What types of licenses, permits, or registrations do you need to have for your business?

Until I started looking into the details of the business part of my business I had no idea what any of this was or why I should care. What I know now is that you need to devote some time and resources to making some powerful choices around the form your business takes.

A business is a legal entity. Even if you are the owner and sole employee there are choices you need to make that will affect your taxes, your legal protections, recordkeeping requirements, and ultimately your bottom line. Two great resources to get you started include Start Up Nation: “A Little Business Structure Goes A Long Way” and the book “LLC or Corporation? How to Choose the Right Form for Your Business” from Nolo Press.

The best advice I can give you is to do as much research as you can on your own and then enlist the professional help of an accountant and lawyer familiar with small businesses to give you definitive advice.

Working the Plan & Finding the Funding

Once you have a business and marketing plan it is time to start working it. Building a business is a distance run, not a sprint. The key is consistent action over time. If you were the type to cram and pull all-nighters for an exam in college, it is time to change your ways. While you may find yourself cramming at times, it should not and can not be your regular mode of operation or you and your business are likely to crash and burn.
Money makes the world go around. And, without funding you and your business are going nowhere. Depending on the type of business you are starting, you may find that you don’t need a ton of capital to get started. I recently wrote at length about “Preparing Financially to Go Solo” on my website, but I will touch on some of the key ways you can find the funds you need to get started.

If you need money you can:

  • Borrow from your savings
  • Use your credit cards (preferably a business account credit card)
  • Borrow from friends, family, or other sources like prosper.com
  • Get a loan from a bank
  • Find a venture capitalist (but only if you have a BIG business idea expected to turn millions since VC’s aren’t interested in freelancers and your average small businesses)
  • Be your own venture capitalist by starting your business on the side while you continue to work for someone else

There is no one right or wrong answer to how to fund your business. What I do know for sure, though, is that it always takes more money and more time to achieve what you want than what you initially project so be prepared. So many businesses fail just when they are on the cusp of turning the corner to success because they simply run out of money.

Creating Your Support Team

No successful person does it solo. It takes a team. I know I would still be sitting in my room procrastinating and going nowhere at all if it weren’t for my coaches (yes I am a coach, but always have my own coach) and other professional colleagues. While you must be willing to do what it takes to start your business, don’t be fooled into thinking you need to do everything. If someone can do it better than you consider hiring them. It’ll save you time and money in the long run.
People you may want to have on your team include:

  • A life or business coach
  • Accountant
  • Lawyer
  • Insurance agent
  • Small business or marketing consulting
  • Assistant
  • Bookkeeper
  • A mentor
  • Webmaster/designer
  • Graphic designer/artist
  • Technology consultant
  • Many others…

In the coach training I completed they often called your support team your “Team 100″. The theory being that you should have a list of 100 people that can support you in your life and business. If you’d like a free copy of this worksheet, contact me and ask for the “Team 100 Worksheet”.

Another resource that really helped me cover all the aspects of business building (from business entity to support team to marketing) was the “Overnight MBA” by Leah Grant. While it is geared toward coaches, the steps and exercises are fundamentally sound for any business (especially service professionals).

Getting Clients

Ah, the elusive clients. In a philosophical sense, if you don’t have any clients or customers (or at least prospects), do you even have a business or just a nice idea?

Sales and marketing (S&M) is not a dirty word. In fact it is crucial to your success. It is not about getting something, rather it is about building relationships. People buy from and work with people they know, like, and trust. All sales and marketing is about getting the right people (for your business) to say yes to you at the right time (for them).

Sales and marketing needs to be done in an authentic way if you want lasting success and don’t want to feel like a car salesman in a cheap suit. The cheap, phony route isn’t sustainable and certainly isn’t the path to living a life aligned with your personal integrity. Sales and marketing consultants are like bunny rabbits, they multiple in great numbers every day. If you hire one, make sure you’re hiring one who knows what they are doing and have a proven track record.

Some of the absolute best resources, methodologies, and people I have found out there include Andrea J. Lee, Get Clients Now from C.J. Hayden, Book Yourself Solid, and The Client Attraction System. Again, my perspective has been from a service based business, so you may find better resources out there dedicated solely to marketing products but the fundamentals of all these programs apply to whatever business you’re in.

Managing the Business (systems)

All successful businesses have systems in place whether the business consists of one person or thousands of franchises. In fact, that is what makes franchises so successful — the proven systems. When you buy a franchise you don’t just buy their product (the burgers, hoagies, water ice, etc.) and their brand, you buy their proven systems for running the business.

What is a system? It can be anything from the way you do a certain task to an actual piece of technology that enables a part of your business. The important element of a system is that it is repeatable and minimizes effort (is as automatic as possible). For example, an auto responder system is a piece of technology that automatically sends emails to your prospects without you having to intervene. You set up the email responses and list settings once, and all new people who sign up are handled automatically. This is a system for handling potential prospects.

Having the right systems in place will not only help you work your plans consistently, but also free up your time and energy so you can actually have a life too. Part of what I love about my business coach in the past was his focus on putting systems in place that work to bring you the results you want while also allowing you to live the life you want. There’s nothing worse than choosing to start a business because you don’t want the confinement of the corporate walls only to find out that you have created the worst prison you could ever imagine right within your own business. Having a jerk as a boss is much more painful when the jerk is YOU.

Ongoing Learning

If you were the type to toss your graduation cap and cheer because you don’t need to learn anymore, you definitely don’t want to start your own business. But, I know since you are a Here’s Margie reader, that you thrive on learning new information, otherwise you wouldn’t have read this far! Investing in YOU pays dividends both personally and professionally.

When you are starting out, you want to invest your time and money in learning several types of things:

  • Skills
  • Business savvy and “soft skills”
  • Personal development

To run a business you definitely need to do some skill building. Don’t be fooled that skills are the main event, though. You also need to fortify your business soft skills and personal development. Remember, your success will be determined more by WHO you are than WHAT you can do. I advocate becoming masterful at whatever skills needed to provide outstanding value to your customers. What I also know is that you need to balance the scales so you are a well-rounded person who can thrive in various environments and situations. That is what being an entrepreneur is all about — a hire wire juggling act of skills, relationships, personalities, and personal qualities.

Revisiting and Revising

When you plant a garden in the spring, you don’t just throw down some seed and ignore it for months and hope something grows. The same holds true for business. You need to tend to your business by working “on” your business strategically at regular intervals. Revisit your business and marketing plans at least several times a year. Revise your plans and financial projections regularly. Measure and monitor your activities and results. These are all part of the cycle of keeping your finger on the pulse of both what is currently happening with your business as well as staying in touch with what you really want and envision for the future.

Owning a business is hard work but can also be very rewarding. Your business is a living, breathing, and evolving part of your life. How you care for yourself will directly impact the success of your business. If you get stuck or start to feel stale, consider creating some space so you can step back and get a fresh perspective and re-energize for the road ahead.
Now that you’ve started your business or landed the job, I’ll talk next time about making the most of it.

To Swallow or Not To Swallow... that is the question?

Xochial Crash : June 17, 2009 3:00 pm : HIV, Public Health, Xochial, sexual health

So kiddies, as I was reading this article it got me thinking about what do you do?

This question was submitted to Dr. K over at gay.com and I submit it to you. Do you swallow and if so, do you know the status of your partner? Do you think that you can become infected with any diseases this way? If not, why do you think that?

Tell me what your thoughts are on this question! As Pride is right around the corner, and I know that all you little Horn-dog kiddies are gonna try and git you some that weekend, I want you all to be safe and to make informed choices. Even IF you know for absolute certainty that your partner is Negative for any and all little critters, it is still wise to cover it up.

Were the World Mine

Xochial Crash : June 10, 2009 5:52 pm : Home, Xochial, education

The title of the movie. Says it all. “Were the world mine, what would you do?” That is my premise to you kiddies. What would you do if you had the power to make who ever you wanted fall in love with you. Would you chase down the hottie you spied at the bar last night? Would you try to find an ex that you can’t stop thinking about?

I just got done watching this movie and it, as most love movies do, made me cry. Cry for the loves that I have lost, for the love that I have yet to find, and for the love that I yearn for. I know that this is a human thing to want that love that will hold you for eternity and beyond. I know that everyone basically wants this same thing.

I was going to simply write a review of this good movie, but have decided that in this month of Pride that we all need to take a few moments out of our busy lives and tell those that we love, that we love them. Let them know this. Pride is about having pride in living my life openly and honestly. About not be ashamed of who I am. I am big person, I am a shy person and I dress in drag to help Mrs. Pederson spread her word on safer sex. This to me is what I have pride about. That I can embrace myself and those around me, even the ones that I truly despise, and let them live their lives as they see fit.

In the movie, the lead character discovers the “Secret Love Juice”. No, not that one silly! I guess there is a myth in the acting world that if you read Shakespeare’s “A Mid-summer Nights Dream”  in a certain cadence that there will be revealed to you a magic potion that will make anyone you wish fall madly in love with you. He discovers this potion and spreads the magic around town so everyone can live in his shoes for awhile. I wish that this potion really did exist. For it would stop all the hate and bigotry.

I for one would love to wake up one day and discover that hatred and bigotry had disappeared and that everyone was left to live their loves as they wanted to. With respect to stopping the killings of gays for being gay and such.

So, if you want to see a movie that does end with a happy ending, and is well made, I suggest you rent or buy “Were the World Mine”. I know that as soon as I am able to, I will be adding this movie to my collection.

Sister Dottie S. Dixon

Xochial Crash : June 7, 2009 8:56 pm : Drag, GLBT Rights, GLBT Youth, Margie, Xochial, education

Hi there kiddies,

I have to say that I was surprised today to learn that Mrs. P. had trekked across the land to visit her dear friend in Utah for Pride weekend.

This gave me a chance to reconnect with Sister Dotties’ website(www.sisterdottie.com) as I had almost forgotten about her. It has been awhile since she was mentioned here and it is a big shame that we have not said anything about this remarkable woman.

I just got done reading an article about her show that was given rave reviews, “The Passion of Sister Dottie S. Dixon”. I really like the part of the article that states that as gay folk, it is time that we rewrite our stories. That we stand up and shuck off the old victim/martyr storyline and live our lives openly as happy people. Show the world that we are just as normal as the rest of them hets are.

Well, I wont say anything else here for you really do need to visit her page and read her story in her own words. I just wanted toss my two cents out there as-well.

Brava Sister Dottie!!  Show em how its done!!

Half of Chicago gay men in study did not know they have HIV...

Xochial Crash : June 3, 2009 2:51 pm : HIV, Public Health, Xochial, education, sexual health

Hi Kiddies,

This is the title of a new study that was posted online at Chi*Town Daily News.

This study brings in to sharp relief the facts of gay men engaging in risky behavior. It also pointed out a startling fact to me. That gay white men are more likely to use illicit drugs than any other group that was interviewed! That is shocking to me. I know of more African-American men who use illicit drugs far more than white men. So for me to read that in this group of 600 gay men it was not true.

Here is what my fav Blog, towleroad.com, posted about this article that piqued my curiosity: Chicago HIV study released: “A first-of-its-kind study looking at HIV infection rates found that half of gay men in Chicago who have HIV did not know they were infected, and two-thirds of infected black men were unaware. In addition, infection rates for black men were more than twice the rates for whites and Hispanics. The results of the Chicago Department of Public Health survey are sobering, officials say, but not unexpected.”

Click here to read the article yourself.

Please comment on your own perceptions of life here in the Twin Cities. I would really like to hear what is going on here.

June Reading

The Relationship Queen : June 2, 2009 8:09 am : education

The June Reading was taken from the Morgan Greer Deck.

morgan_c_10.jpg10 of Cups:

Wow!  Things are amazing.  Amazingly good or amazingly bad but, either way emotions are high and you are wearing them on your sleeve.

King of Cups:

morgan_c_kg.jpgThe King signifies that order and control is needed.  Don’t let your emotions control you—even if they are happy emotions.  Use all your current emotional flow to achieve your goals.  Pull in the reigns and allow this increased self emotional awareness to move you forward.  You are at risk during this time for self absorption.  If you have been in the honeymoon phase of a relationship it is time to come up for air and remember there’s a whole big world out there.  If you have been wallowing in self pity or a bad break-up the message is the same….time to focus outside yourself.

Queen of Pentacles:  morgan_p_qn.jpg

She reinforces the King with the added component of manifestation.  If you can capture your emotional energy and keep your focus things will start to materialize.  Awareness of your emotions combined with knowing what you want can be a powerful combination.  Harness this energy.

Meditative Card:  Queen of Swords

morgan_s_qn.jpg

Use your sword to cut through emotional confusion.  This is a time of high emotional awareness which can be overwhelming.  Use the Queen of Swords to help keep you grounded and realistic.

Africa AIDS activists slam US funding shortfall

Xochial Crash : May 27, 2009 11:25 am : HIV, Public Health, Xochial, education

Hey Kiddies,

I was reading over at 365gay.com an article titled as above. It got me thinking, along with the comments attached to the article, when did it become the responsibility of the United States to care for the rest of the world? I know we as a nation have always tried to help the rest of the people who appeared unable to do so, but really, when did this happen?

Our economy is in shambles, we have near record unemployment. And a shrinking job market. So, tell me, when did it become our job to support your health care systems? Take care of your own for awhile, while we try to take care of ours so that in the future when all is settled down and running somewhat smoothly again, we can once more help you help yourselves.

I will get off my soap-box now.

If you want to read the whole article yourself and come to your own conclusions, please click here–>

Just a quick note...

post-early-aids-walk-09.JPGMuffins:

I want to tell you that the MN AIDS Walk this morning was fantastic!  As I parked near the park on my way in I ran into Jeremy (one of the Bachelor’s from the recent PrideAlive Bachelor Auction)who had just completed the AIDS Run (second annual).  He looked none the less for wear and he was smiling for his accomplishment.  I arrived into the park with the rhythm pumping to the club sounds of an intense pre-walk work out.  I will be posting a YouTube later today with video and photo footage but suffice it to say, once again the community rallied to support the need to end HIV and raise awareness.  Kudos to Dave Em and Chambers for hosting the official after party – which goes until 7pm if you are reading this and looking for a fun afternoon event.

Thanks to all who participated in any of the events that helped raise awareness and funding for the work of the Minnesota AIDS Project and affiliates.

More to come but P’s on the run – so many events so little time.  Look for the video link soon!

Love and Peace,

P

Where is the MN Version of all this?

Xochial Crash : May 15, 2009 8:05 pm : HIV, Xochial, education, sexual health

Hi Kiddies,

It has been awhile since we actually discussed anything health news related here and I have to take my fair share of the blame for that.

So, in that line of thought, I was searching the web for something interesting to write about and happened upon an article at gaycitynews.com that was written a few weeks back. It deals with young gay men, mostly in their early twenties, who recently found out they had become HIV Positive. It covers a lot of different people and organizations there in New York City.  You can click here to read the whole story yourself.

It still made me stop and think about who here in the Twin Cities would one visit when they find out they are HIV Positive. Honestly, the only places that popped into my head are MAP (MN Aids Project) and The Aliveness Project. I am sure there are more places out there, but these are the only two that I know of.

So, comment and write. Tell me if you know of any places where a young person who has recently been diagnosed with HIV can turn and get sound support and advice.

A Walk for Good!

Margie : May 14, 2009 11:45 pm : HIV, Public Health, education, sexual health

Muffins:

It has been a long day and I am quite tired.  I wanted to share with you that there are just a few days remaining before the MN AIDS Walk.  If you have never been to the walk I hope this is the year you just saunter on down to Minnehaha Park on Sunday May 17th to expereince one of the great things the Spring in Minnesota has to offer.  There is still an opportunity to give, to see and be seen and to participate in a very worthy and needed day of raising visibility and funding to stop HIV and support those livining with HIV and AIDS.

For more information read my recent article in Meefers.

I look forward to seeing you all on Sunday!

after-party-aids-walk.jpgOh, and Dave Em would not like it one bit if I didn’t also mention that there is an official after party at The Chambers Luxury Art Hotel that evening.

Gay Restaurant Opening, Bebe, Brass Rail, & Website Review Request Fulfilled.

Moisha : May 11, 2009 1:35 pm : Drag, HIV, Moisha

Hello Fiends, new and old, so much to say so lemme get started.

Well a former Gay Bar owner (I won’t say whom, but I wrote of previously) is to open aHM Hamburger Mary’s in Uptown. Hamburger Mary’s is the ONLY national chain actively marketing to the gay community. It’ll be located at 23rd and Hennepin and due to open after Pride. The franchise has been purchased so I wish him well.

I had a chance for a brief talk with Bebe Zahara Benet a while I’m not one to gush. She seemed very nice, down to Earth and genuine. She has her own Walk Team for MN AIDS Walk next week named CamaroooonCamaroooon to her for her “keeping it real” and her chutzpah for doing good for the community with her new pull and power.

The World Famous Brass Rail when due to open before Pride will not be hiring back their former staff. -I would’ve assumed they were laid off and could have their jobs back. But I’ve been wrong before. -Who knew?

One of my most recent posts was for local gay website reviews. And I have had a request to review MySceneCity will but I’ll throw in their competition (lavender)

MySceneCity.com  (while the template seems like it could work, I’m overwhelmed visually. My eyes go everywhere. K.I.S.S would be my advice. Visuals are great here but WAY too much) B-

Lavender.com (Again a lot of info, but found a way to not overstimulate. Things are categorized and believe I would be able to find what I need, should I need to.) A-

Again, none if this is to be taken as a true story. This is all rumor and here-say. This is to be taken as pure entertainment. So be entertained, and if you wish to share this”entertainment” please pass along this disclaimer as well.

That being said, I am finding out that I am getting some powerful readers. So if you are someone “in the know” and have some dish, please pass along to gossipjew@gmail.com . You can remain anonymous, but I will have to check out your story. -I can usually do that in a hush hush way too.

Peace (and you BETTER have called your Mothers yesterday!)

The Down Low

Margie : May 6, 2009 4:16 pm : education, sexual health

Recently  I went back to school and as a part of a group project for one of my classes we produced a short video about the Down Low.  The behavior referred to as the Down Low is often times viewed as a phenomena occurring only in the Black and African American communities.  In truth, with the advent of sites like Craig’s List and Squirt.org not to mention the myriad of free hook up sites like Adam4Adam and Manhunt.net there is no shortage for finding partners who like to get a little on the side.

Take a few minutes to educate yourself about the Down Low and ten share your info with your friends.  It isn’t so much the cheating it’s the risks you may be unwittingly taking by not being informed about additional sexual partners your squeeze is “doing”.

Off to class…

New Dining in Minneapolis

Margie : April 30, 2009 8:37 am : HIV

dol.gifHello Muffins:

It seems appropriate on the day when so many are heading to all of the existing fine dining establishments we boast in the Twin Cities to let you know about another that is opening tomorrow.  Today is Dining Out For Life, an annual event to raise money and awareness for The Aliveness Project.  All you need do in order to support this worthwhile cause is step out of your kitchen for a well deserved break and go out to eat.  On the website for the event you will find all you need to determine where you want to dine.  There are restaurants and bars that will donate a percentage (some all the way up to 100 percent) of the bill back to The Aliveness Project.  Ambassadors are available at the designated establishments to answer questions and to collect additional contributions from people who want to give more.  The event is a great way to get out and mix with others too!  Last year I bumped into none other than Wanda Wisdom while enjoying a relaxing meal at Spill the Wine.

If you just cannot free yourself up today, consider sending a donation directly to Aliveness to support the many programs they provide for people living with HIV and AIDS.

pchef-doug.JPGTomorrow night a new face in dining is arriving on the scene.  Chef Douglas Bistrup is opening a new venue at the Saloon.  The trial for this new use of what used to be the smoking patio was run on Valentine’s Day this year.  I attended that special event and wrote about it on Meefers.  I was very excited at the Bachelor Auction last Sunday when I was able to chat with Chef Doug about the opening tomorrow night.  I am sure he and his talented team in the kitchen will tantalize us with a wide array of scrumptious delights.  Be sure to make a reservation soon to try out the new place in town.

Good luck Aliveness and Chef Doug!

Peaceful Journeys

Margie : April 26, 2009 1:16 pm : Moisha, education

universal-signs2.gifAs the Universe would have it, two individuals who have touched my life left us yesterday; one I knew well the other I had never met but feel as though she was a dear friend and kindred spirit.

I am able to honor by tribute, this evening, the one I had never met.  Bea Arthur has left us with a world of laughter that we will be able to embrace for years .  Taken by cancer, I wish her safe passage to join Estelle and others from her flock that have gone before her to welcome her home.

“Birdie” is the other of my valued dear ones that departed yesterday.  I rest well in knowing you are out of pain and suffering my dear sweet Michael.

They both battled cancer and held strong in the face of this horrible disease.  They are both survived by many who loved them.

Love, light and peace is my blessing for each of those who are mourning the losses of these two amazing and spirited individuals.  For both of you on your journey; know your memory is cherished and we are thankful for all the joy you brought our way.  I am sure you both have an amazing collection of others who are there to welcome you home.

Blessed Be.

God - I love this town!

Margie : April 25, 2009 7:55 am : HIV, education

Where else can you live and truly feel like you are the center of the universe?!  We have so many good people doing amazing work and giving so much back to the communities they live in, love and support!  I am so fortunate to have surrounded myself with individuals who continually are focused on the things that really matter.  They are raising much needed funds for struggling non-profits that continue to do astounding things with the shrinking dollars they surv(thrive) on. They are using the tools of the age (Internet, YouTube, Facebook, etc.) to continue a message of hope, love, tolerance, understanding and compassion.  Mostly they are being the completely inspiring individuals I am able to call my friends.  Minneapolis is a shining beacon of light that I am proud to call my home.  You all may think this saccharin of me but I will tell you honestly that I mean every word!

The people in my life are quite fluid and as I say hello to some and farewell to others I m always mindful that life is a precious moment that we can either waste or embrace.  Every moment we have is one that can be productive or else it is lost.  This post is more about all of those individuals I have loved and lost than those who are still in my life.  Today was Arbor Day and the history of that celebration has a tap root which runs deeper than the mighty sequoias of Northern California.  Every human soul that crosses my path is one of exquisite value!

We have become a society of labels and diagnoses; Mentally Ill, HIV positive, Disabled, Wealthy, Poor, Sick, Religious, Gay, Straight, Successful, Denigrated… you get the idea.  I am grateful that I do not see my circle through any of these lenses.  If you are in my world the one thing you can rest assured is that I send you love, light and peace.  Every day we have people that come and go.  The ebb and flow of this human effluence is important as we evolve into the culture of greatness we are entering next.  The world is becoming more intimate as we use the Internet to understand the influence of culture and difference.  I am so looking forward to the next phases of our evolution – I look to the day when we understand cancer and HIV; to the day when all individuals are treated equally and without persecution; to the moment when LOVE is the operative and not falsities proclaimed in the name of Jesus Christ.  More than anything I look forward to the days ahead when we all embrace our sameness rather than villainize our differences.

Blessed be Birdie, Thanks Xochial for coming back to the nest and Peace to all of you we are able to touch with our thoughts and words.

Bachelor's Away...

Margie : April 24, 2009 8:43 pm : Drag, Moisha, Public Health, podcasts, sexual health

Muffins:

bachelor20091.jpgThis Sunday is the 2009 PrideAlive Bachelor Auction.  The event will be bigger and better than ever and is, of course, going to benefit the AIDS Walk for the Minnesota AIDS Project and organizations serving people with HIV and AIDS.

The AIDS Walk website states:

All proceeds are used to stop HIV in Minnesota.
The Minnesota AIDS Walk benefits the Minnesota AIDS Project, a nonprofit agency committed to enhancing the lives of people living with HIV, prevention education for those at risk for HIV, and advocating for the rights of all affected by HIV. Click here to find out more about the organization.

Every Little Bit Helps!

Because of our economy, HIV funding has been greatly decreased. Even small donations are greatly appreciated. Something as small as packing a lunch and donating the $10 you saved is a perfect way to contribute! Now more than ever, your support is needed to help MAP achieve its mission to stop HIV in Minnesota.”

I am so fortunate to be surrounded by talented individuals who work well together.  Yesterday I completed a project that began much earlier this year and is the result of a collaboration with The Smitten Kitten (TSK).  The idea grew out of a podcast I recorded with Jennifer Pritchett, owner of TSK.  Justin C Grey Day was the camera person and the video stars Clare Jacky, Alison Nowak, Scott Schroeder, Kyle Long, Tom Reid, Holly Bifulk, Moisha Lipshitz and none other than yours truly.

The video is about Toxic Toys and their safe disposal.  I hope you will take the time to watch it and do what you can to help clean up our environment.  It is campy and fun but carries with it a message of public health and environmental responsibility.

Don’t miss the Moxie Awards tomorrow night and be at the ready to tune into the video as soon as we launch it in a couple of weeks.

Until then, I will post when I can and I will be announcing one or two more writers to you soon.

So Much News-

Moisha : March 25, 2009 10:30 pm : Drag, HIV, Moisha

Where to start, where to start.

Congratulations go out to Bebe of course. Mozel Tov, Minneapolis’ own Miss Benet for your RuPaul’s Drag Race win!

Well, the Cockpit Project will be to 24th and Hennepin. Right next to Golooney’s in the former “A Brother’s  Touch” location. They’ll have another 150 square feet to serve you with. They’ll open next month with a Grand Opening slated for May 1st.

It has been eight weeks since The World Famous Brass Rail closed. And as of this writing, no liquor license transfer has occurred, according to the city of Minneapolis. The scuttlebutt on the street is they want to turn it into a two story gay sports bar. (which I find hard to believe and to picture)And turn the 3rd floor into apartments.-see you in 2020 Brass Rail!

Brass Rail Logo

The Gay 90′s renovation seems to be bogged down with permit problems. -So much potential for greatness, I hope the vision comes to fruition soon.

The Minneapolis Eagle’s outside bar window rumor of being taken down is true, but probably not until at the end of the season or next year. So another great year of quick outside service for all of you smoker/drinker/sunbathers. And as of writing, The Mr. Minneapolis Eagle 2009 contest has 2 applications turned in. -So fill out your apps and your chaps and compete.

Jason Defreitas, the manager of the 19 bar, was mentioned in the last CityPages. It wasn’t very flattering, basically it was about racism in the twin cities gay scene.

I, of course, will be attending Dining Out for Life on Thursday, April 30th. Looking at the list of 120 participating restaurants, I am pleasantly surprised at some on the list, but more disappointed and some not there. Shame, Shame.

That’s about it. I’m still lacking in St. Paul gossip. So pass it if ya got it. I’ll be doing some sort of video shoot with Margie on Friday and of course I’ll be at the Bachelor Auction April 26th at the Y’All Come Back Saloon.

Again, all of this is alleged and not to be trusted. This is purely for reading entertainment. So sit back & enjoy the reading the “stories” and take from them what you wish. -If you have a scoop, please e-mail gossipjew@gmail.com . Please give as complete of news as possible and you can choose to remain anonymous or not.

Wishing you all the best,

Moisha

Alanopussy?

Margie : March 19, 2009 6:48 am : Home, education, podcasts

octomom_you_decide.jpgRecently while sitting at the table with Coo Coo Cox, I learned of the Octomom.  I had no idea there was this strange story of a new bizarre character to amaze us.  Upon some investigation – we discovered an online video of Nadya Suleman and Ann Curry on NBC’s Today Show.  I immediately recognized a similarity – can you?

alanopussy_2.jpgSorry Alanis!  I know it isn’t flattering, but hey it is uncanny!

A brand new show just went up with Coo Coo Cox and Buffy Van Buren chatting it up with Mrs. P.

Just 15 minutes so you can have a quick listen while you’re trimming your nails.

Have a great day all!

Podcast Announcement

Margie : March 15, 2009 3:26 pm : Drag, Home, Public Health, education, sexual health

Hello Muffins:

This is just a quick update to let you know what is going on behind the scenes at the Heres-Margie workshop.  We have been busy little bees and, consequently, have not been able to get new content up on the blog as quickly as we would like.  I have just spent the morning editing and preparing a new show for “Listener’s Discretion Advised!” That will go up later this evening on the podcast.  Hugh JackmanBe sure not to miss this one as I introduce a new celebrity co-host and we talk about everything under the sun from Syphilis to Hugh Jackman and so much more!

Miss Cee Cee Russel and Miss Camille Collins did the first show with me and those gals are so busy that I have not been able to wrangle them back yet.  Rest assured we will and when we do we will have a hoot!

I have also added a new presence to the Mrs. Pederson virtual line up this weekend.  We’ve joined the world of Squidoo!  I am putting up specific content oriented “lenses” to help broaden our educational impact.  I look forward to a new website look and feel soon so be patient and stop back frequently.  If the look is different from time to time please share your comments.  We are doing some spring cleaning and trying to get the right feel for moving forward.  So much has happened with Heres-Margie in under a year, who can say what will come next!

I am always interested in hearing from you about your experiences with the site so don’t be shy!  Write to me directly at mrspederson@gmail.com

Until this evening when I put up the show I hope you have a splendid day!

Love & Peace,

Margie

Is it Time for a Check Up?

Margie : March 14, 2009 8:25 pm : Home, Margie, Public Health, education, sexual health

time-for-a-check-up.JPGMuffins:

I just  started putting things up on Squidoo thinking it would be a good place for specific risk reduction articles.  They wouldn’t let me post this article because they felt it was “Spambait”.  Well, I have no choice but to go about it another way.  This is thye first time I will redirect you to another portion of Heres-Margie that has been password protected.  The reason for this is that not everyone likes to look at naked penises.  If you are viewing this post from work or in a public environment, please use some common sense and not not go to the protected portion of the site.  unless, of course, you do what I do for work!

So here is what they would not let me post…

Recently a news release from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) announced that there is a rise in new syphilis cases (2008) and that the new incidence among gay and bisexual men represented the greatest increase. Makes sense right? A lot of gay men to give and get head. This is one of the many ways syphilis can be transmitted. Therefore, it makes sense that there would be a rise. That combined with the tech savvy culture of queers (most of ‘em anyway) and their use of the Internet to find sexual partners it makes sense that they can have a lot of sex in a lot less time than it used to take to get all dressed up and go out to find their partners. Less time to hook up means more time to play – right? That means more time to potentially catch a bug or two. Window periods are important here. You could “play with” Johnnie, Pat, Matt and Steve one weekend and not even know you have contracted syphilis by the time you “do” Frank, Sam and Willie at the pool party on Thursday night. Not saying you are a whore and not judging if you are… just saying – maybe it’s time to figure out your risk of contracting “social diseases” and take some precautions so as not to become a statistic! Get in, get tested, know your sex partner’s status and consider condoms (yes even for blow jobs)! Not sure which one to use (maybe you really don’t like to suck on a raw bratwurst which is what a lot of people think a cock in a latex condom looks like) try the polyurethane Supra (made by Trojan).

It is clear, odorless and tasteless. You can wipe off the little bit of lube it comes packaged with and viola you have lunch! Click here to see actual photos I have posted for you: one wrapped in a Supra and one not. Not much difference visually and it could just save you from a real pain in the ass! Literally. The treatment for syphilis is a shot in each cheek and it is said to make sitting kinda tough for a bit.

Be forewarned that you will see naked penises if you click on the link and you will need to enter the password “syphilis” to enter that page.

That’s it. Done with my diatribe. Here’s to your sexual health.

Love and Peace,

Margie

Spring?

Margie : March 13, 2009 9:37 am : education, fitness, podcasts

Muffins:

It truly is hard to believe that we are just days away from Spring and yet the weather is acting like a ping pong ball.  I am pleased to say that the lengthening days are helping with moods (my own included) all around me.  If you are still in the slumps here are a couple of things you might try…

I found a new online magazine called Chase Rivers Flair

chaserivers.jpgNow you know how much I adore Martha, but alternatives are good as well.  I liked the magazine enough to share it with all of you.  It did a lot to pick up my day and heighten my enthusiasm for the much anticipated sights and smells that come with spring.

I will be back soon to share all kinds of news, special reports and, of course, podcasts!

Enjoy your weekends all!

Penis & Jelly

Margie : March 8, 2009 5:26 pm : Public Health, education

austrian-times.jpgHello Muffins:

I have just arrived home from a very exciting video production meeting and all is shaping up nicely for the next project to be right on schedule for an Earth Day 2009 release.  You have heard us talk about the importance of getting rid of your toxic adult toys and now we have an opportunity to assist you in doing just that.

If you have always wanted to star in a YouTube video and are interested in bringing awareness to the proper disposal of toxic toys then send me an email at mrspederson@gmail.com with “count me in” in the subject line.  We are looking for 10 lucky individuals to be in a video short for release on Earth Day.  I will get back to you with details and we can see if you have the “Star Quality” that we are seeking for this fun educational video.

Not sure what a toxic toy is? Consider watching a plug for every season or going to Coalition Against Toxic Toys for more information.  I also highly recommend you check out what is happening in Austria for the environmentally savvy adult toy users there.

Stay Tuned and get in touch!

March Tarot Reading

The Relationship Queen : March 6, 2009 6:20 am : Home, education

5_of_swords.jpg

Editor’s Note:

We aplogize for the delay in getting this post up.  The rush to finalize the party details put us a bit behind.  We hope you enjoy the reading.

This month’s reading comes from the Morgan Greer Deck

5 of Swords:  The image shows s victorious fighter and those he defeated.  No matter which image speaks to you…you are not feeling good about things right now.  Whatever is going on , you feel defeated and hopeless and possibly a little humiliated.  If you are the victor, it is an empty victory that you do feel like celebrating.  Perhaps you have betrayed someone in order to “win” or accomplish your goal.  Maybe you won a battle that you don’t really believe in.

6_of_wands.jpg6 of Swords:  This image is of someone on their way to victory.  They will be victorious because they believe in themselves and what they are fighting for.  Wands represent passion, fire and sprit.  Now is the time to rise up and take action and the key is being clear about what you want and why, and in believing that your success is inevitable. It is about believing in yourself.

The Sun (Reversed):  The Sun represents optimism and wonder.  sun.jpgIt represents the ability to see all things with simple clarity and to appreciate and feel joyful regarding life.  In the reverse position you are at risk for having this vision or clarity clouded.  Positioned next to the 6 of Swords it asks you to remember that being victorious is not winning one battle or meeting one goal.  It is constantly striving for what you believe in and the appreciation of each day.  It is the appreciation of being able to live your life and “fight the good fight.”  Take joy in who you are and what you do and you will be your own victory.

History Repeating...?

Margie : March 2, 2009 4:55 pm : Home, Public Health, education, sexual health

History RepeatingOkay, so I am not a rocket scientist – clearly!  But I think there are some things that just don’t require that level of smarts.  It is all over the news that Syphilis rates among men who have sex with men (MSM) are reported to have increased by 40% in 2007.  Also, we’ve lost the funding (And therefore have eliminated) the Syphilis Elimination Project that was in place through the Minnesota Department of Health up until December of 2008.

We’ve had increasing Syphilis rates in the past (as recently as 2004).  Which leads me to the point of this post…

Why do we continue to be penny-wise and pound foolish when it comes to public health.  Listen to Shirley sing history repeating, read the reports and contact your officials.  More importantly, share this news with someone you care about who is sexually active.  Educate yourself about symptoms of Syphilis and other STIs as well as HIV and GET TESTED!  If you don’t know how or where to go – consider contacting the Minnesota AIDSLine.

Be a positive part of Minnesota’s history.  Help to reverse this alarming trend.

Love Ya!

Hello Muffins:

We’ve had a lot of activity this past week and so I am simply going to post a few links to help capture it all.

Sunday night we had our Oscar night celebration and Friends Dining with Friends event to benefit Clare Housing.  You can read all about it on Meefers.com.

muffy-coo-coo-and-john.JPG

On Monday my dear friend Xochial Crash and I did a podcast about the night before and wondered where Cee Cee Russell and Camille Collins wandered off to.

On Wednesday another show went up on the podcast featuring Kate Nelson, Public Policy Coordinator for the Minnesota AIDS Project.

Today I planned the next video which will be a collaboration between Mrs. Pederson’s production company (See You Next Tuesday Productions) and The Smitten Kitten.  You won’t want to miss it as I am sure it will delight!

Quite a productive week I’d say.  Hope yours was as well!

The Blurriest Weekend EVER!

Margie : February 17, 2009 12:38 am : Drag, Margie, education, podcasts

Hello Muffins:

Just a quick note before I am off to bed.  Beginning last Friday,, when Miss Wanda Wisdom had me on her show, (Luckybitchradio.com) I have been on a bit of a roller-coaster ride.  I had to travel out to Maple Plain to evaluate a future site for some activities I am planning and then I The Fearless Hunterneeded to tend to matters closer to home for the remainder of the weekend.  Valentine’s day, as many of you already know, I needed to begin the process of saying goodbye to my dear companion Benny.  Benny was a strong feline I had in my life for nearly 15 of his 18 years.  He was a gentle giant and loved by many – he will be missed.  Through the encouragement of friends & family I did still manage to get out to the Saloon for a nice meal with my friend Gosh Alice Jones.  I must applaud Chef Douglas Bistrup and the entire staff of the new Fire Bar and Restaurant in the fireside room (formerly the smoking patio) at the beloved complex on the corners of 9th and Hennepin in downtown Minneapolis.  I will do a separate post on the food (which was fantastic) in the next day or so.  I will also be putting up a fun little video that we managed to record that night in spite of the other goings on.  Sunday rolled around and poor Benny needed me to intervene when he was ready for his final call.  So after many tears and consultation, dear Nurse Linda and Matthew (housemate) assisted in my bringing him to the Animal Humane Society to be put down and cremated.  Benny – you are still so present in our lives and we thank you for the love and joy you brought us for so many years – rest in peace dear friend.  Today was a day of sadness and reflection as I poured through old photos of my dear companion, along with many friends and family who also were touched by his presence.  Later this afternoon, I was visited by two other dear friends Cee Cee Russell and Camille Collins.  We decided to record part of our chat and that grew into a brand new idea.  We are going to begin another brand new podcast!  We are calling it Listener Discretion Advised!  I hope to have the first show up tomorrow (with disclaimers!)

We chat about everything from Ms. Collins fishing for a date for the upcoming Oscar Night Celebrations to bereavement and the importance of appreciating what each day brings.

Thank you ladies – you brought joy into an otherwise very sad day.

Stay tuned for the announcement of the new podcast.  Dont’ worry Mrs Pederson will still be putting up new shows on podbean as well.  Oh – and if you did not catch the progrum with Wanda, here’s a link to it.

A Special Tarot Reading for Valentine's Day!

The Relationship Queen : February 14, 2009 10:53 am : education

Valentine’s Day:  Even if you think it has become a Hallmark holiday contrived to make you feel bad if you are not in a relationship or guilty if you are in one and didn’t buy roses, chocolates, or diamonds….I guarantee that at some point close to the 14th you are going to find yourself thinking about love and relationships.

For your valentine reading I used the Cosmic Tarot Deck.

Cosmic Two of CupsCard 1:  Appropriately enough the Two of Cups.  Cups are the hearts of the tarot deck and as you could guess the two of cups generally refers to a relationship of the heart.  So if you are in a relationship this card is your relationship….if you are single this is your desire to be in a relationship.  Maybe you have someone in mind…maybe you are just thinking about what a partnership would look like for you.

Although cups are the hearts of the deck the rest of the cards in this reading are swords.  Swords represent the element of air…all things of the mind, your fears and sorrows, your spirit.  So while we feel things with our hearts (cups)…what we do with those feelings is swords.  Unfortunately when we turn those feelings into thoughts and actions that’s where we tend to screw things up.  That’s how you talk yourself into going for it or out of it.  It’s that force that makes you decide that it could never work and the source of doubt and paranoia. How appropriate for Valentines Day!!

Cosmic Princess of SwordsCard 2:  The Princess of Swords.  She deals with things by either detaching herself from emotions or by letting her emotions control her actions.  She is often aloof, feeling she is above human emotions.  When she allows herself to become emotional it often leads to paranoia or obsession.  This Valentine’s day (in general) or regarding one of your own relationships or emotions - Balance is needed.  You can’t cut yourself off from your emotions and you can’t just run around acting on pure impulse….well not all the time anyway!

Cosmic Two of SwordsCard 3:  Two of Swords:  Take time to get in touch with your true feelings before taking action.  But don’t get stuck there.  A sword is no good just resting in your hand.  At some point you have to take action.  So this Valentine’s day…..after careful thought, it is time to take action.  Tell someone how you really feel.  Do something you have been meaning to do.  Use those swords to sweep someone off their feet or maybe to finally cut the ties for good!

As Mrs. P and I have discussed,  some relationships have an expiration date!  If the milk is spoiled it is not a crime to throw it out.  But only you will know which is best once your heart and mind have come into alignment.

Love and light to all

Chelle

Smitten Kitten Thriving

Margie : February 12, 2009 8:54 am : HIV, Home, Public Health, education, podcasts, sexual health

Visit TSK OnlineMuffins:

Recently I had an opportunity to sit down with the owner of The Smitten Kitten, Jennifer Pritchett.  We had a lovely chat and I recorded part of it for the podcast that is going up along with this post.

visit badvibes.orgFor those of you not in the know, The Smitten Kitten (TSK) is an adult toy store located in Minneapolis on the corners of Lyndale and Lake.  They’ve been around now for five years and Jennifer has just recently started blogging on Facebook.  The store is committed to not only bringing you fun toys to spice up your life.  They also are very committed to bringing about awareness that relates to what is sometimes referred to as “Toxic Toys”.  They do this through the non-profit division of their work and the corresponding website “Coalition Against Toxic Toys”.  Sexual health awareness is always something that is freely discussed when you step in the store.  In fact, the words of my dear freind Gosh Alice Jones, “Sexual Freedom ; Social Responsibility” are what often come to mind when I am chatting with any of the very educated staff.  If you are a far away reader, never fear – the new website has much of the same info and all of the toys you can purchase in the store can be ordered online and discretely shipped directly to your door.  This spring, Mrs P and TSK have something big lined up for Earth Day so stay tuned.

Listen to the show!

Until then, take a moment and listen to the show.

You might just learn something.

Suck Away!?

Xochial Crash : February 4, 2009 6:46 pm : HIV, education, sexual health

Hey there kiddies,

Now I know that title is a bit titillating and that is the reason I chose it. I just read a brief article about the possibility that oral sex between partners may actually be beneficial to the partner performing the fellatio.

It seems that there was a study done in Sweden that looked at several couples in-which one is HIV Poz and the other is HIV Neg, and it seemed to show that the neg partner appeared to develop anti-bodies to the HIV of their specific partner.

Read the article yourself below (via www.wisdomofwhores.com):

Does oral sex protect against HIV? Suck it and see

Public health types are always agonising about oral sex. Should we say it’s dangerous or not? Now, Swedish researchers have shown that lots of oral sex with an HIV-infected partner may actually be protective against the virus.

The study, published in the (expensive, subscription only) AIDS journal and helpfully summarised by Aidsmap suggests that men who give lots of blow jobs to their HIV-positive partners develop antibodies specific to that partner’s virus, protecting themselves against infection. The more virus their partner has kicking around in their semen, the higher the concentration of specific antibodies, and the protection seems to last for quite a while too. None of the men became infected over the course of the study, even though their partners were not all on treatment.

I’ve never been one for warning people off oral sex — while it is not 100 percent risk free it’s almost always safer than any of the alternatives that provide as much fun. But I’d hate to lose my agonised public health type credentials entirely, so I’ll point out a caveat in this study. The couples who were recruited, an infected man with an uninfected partner, had to have been together for at least 6 months — beyond the most dangerous period for infection in most cases. Any guys who did get HIV through oral sex in that risky early part of their relationship wouldn’t be in the study, because they would no longer be in a “discordant” relationship.

But, as mentioned the in article, these people chosen for the study had been in their relationship for at least six months. So I am still a little unsure of what this means to greater HIV community or Safe Sex advocates.

Tell me what you think. OK??!!

Good relationship advice from Weston Edwards

Cold Morning, Hot Coffee

Margie : January 28, 2009 11:24 am : Drag, HIV, Margie, Public Health, education, podcasts

Lee Haugee from Clare HousingWell Muffins, there really isn’t any finer way to start a chilly Minnesota morning than a chat with a good friend and enjoying a strong cuppa Joe at the kitchen table.

This morning I had the pleasure of visiting with Lee Haugee, Special Event and Volunteer Manager for Clare Housing.  The good folks at Clare Housing have been providing supportive living services to people with HIV and AIDS for years now.  We recorded the conversation and you can listen to on our little podcast.

Listen to the show and learn about all the ways in which you can be a part of the action.  More importantly stay tuned as later today I will be revealing all of the details about the upcoming benefit for Clare Housing that I will be co-hosting with none other than Xochial, Nurse Linda and sex Eddie.  I am so proud of the P Team for their work behind the scenes to support organizations like Clare Housing.

Thanks Lee, for taking time out of your hectic schedule to sit a spell with P!

What an Amazing Day...

Margie : January 21, 2009 1:16 pm : GLBT Youth, Home, Public Health, education, podcasts

Yesterday was a very special day for me Muffins.

Not only did I watch in wonder as we swore in our first Black President, but I was able to then spend time in the evening with a diverse and dedicated group of individuals all connected by a common thread.

The event I attended was one sponsored by the Rainbow Health Initiative and PFund and was hosted by Marnita’s Table.  I encourage you to click on the links for each of those organizations to learn more.

Let me simply say in this posting that the conversation was centered around what it takes to build strong, healthy individuals and a strong LGBT community.  People of all different ethnicity, ages and orientations gathered around a single task – to define what health is and what it looks like in our own lives and in our community.  The contributions each person made were insightful and congruent with the task.

The event could not have happened on a better day.  I will say that I was able to first hand experience the change this is at our feet.  Change that could not happen at a better time since we now face so many community wide challenges.  Through the conversation stimulated by this diverse group coming together, I was able to visualize how real change may occur.  There is nothing we cannot handle if we simply gather together to work as a community on the problems.  We also need to celebrate our successes and share them with others.  Eating a meal together with people who are not like you, be that race or opinion or orientation or difference, is a great way to break down barriers in order to start building new foundations!

Opportunities exist for each of us to do this.  One such opportunity is a photo contest depicting a healthy LGBT community so we can begin to combat a frequently promoted yet grossly inaccurate picture of the LGBT community as somehow flawed or less than healthy.

That is why I took time out a few days ago to interview Loretta Worthington, Executive Director for Rainbow Health Initiative about a project they are doing in conjunction with Lavender Smoke Free Communities.

 Listen to the show

mrs_pederson_itunes.jpg

The project is a photo contest depicting a healthy LGBT community.  The interview is up on the podcast site and I encourage you to listen to it.  I also encourage you to go to the website and learn about the contest.  You can go directly to the the contest info by clicking on the image below.

On the dash now so I will simply end this post by saying

“Here’s to our Health”!

Career & Money - Part 6: Landing the Job - Make and Close the Deal

Pay It Forward : January 19, 2009 2:25 pm : Steven Hintz, education

In Part I of “Landing the Job” I talked about researching possible employers, preparing your resume, and finding and applying for potential positions. This time I’ll cover what happens once you get that call you’ve been hoping for: interviewing, receiving the offer/rejection, and negotiating.

As I said before, the resume’s sole purpose is to get you an interview. The interview is where you get to sell the potential employer on the benefits to them if they hire you. It is also your chance to get into their environment, have a look for yourself, and interview them.

Preparing for the interview phase is crucial. The devil is in the details. You need to be concerned about a myriad of things once you set the date and time of your interview:

  • How do I get there (directions and travel)?
  • What do I wear?
  • What do I need to bring?
  • What will be expected of me? (number of interviews, nature of the interview, any testing involved, etc.)
  • How do I answer the questions they ask me?
  • What questions should I ask them?
  • What should I be looking for as I observe the environment and the people?
  • How do I demonstrate knowledge of this potential employer?
  • What do I do after the interview to follow up?

Now that I’ve probably thrown you into overwhelm, let me reassure you that the single most important thing you need to do in an interview is to be yourself (albeit a professional version of yourself and not the hanging out on a Friday night version, but authentically and genuinely YOU nonetheless). Why is that? Well, as someone who has tried to fake her way through an interview being what I thought they expected of me I can tell you the outcome of such fakery will be one of two things:

1) They see right through it and choose not to pursue you any further (which is a godsend oftentimes).

or

2) You land the job and suffer mercilessly like a drag queen in pumps 3 sizes too small.
Either way it’s a waste of time and energy.

Let me address each of these questions at least briefly.

How do I get there (directions and travel)?

Interviews are nerve wracking. Don’t add to your stress by winging it. Get clear on the directions, any detours, and other travel details. Most importantly, leave yourself extra time. It’s better to sit in your car with a magazine for 30 minutes than sweat it out on the freeway.

What do I wear?

Consider the type of position and dress code of the people in it. Dress as they dress plus a notch above. So, for instance, if it is business casual, still wear a suit to interview. And, wear something that flatters you and is unique to your style, but remember that while you want to be authentic, you don’t want to overdo it on the first impression.

What do I need to bring?

At a minimum, bring the same number of copies of your resume (printed so they look professional on high grade paper – we may live in a virtual society but interviews are still high-touch for the most part) to equal the number of people you are meeting. Add a few extras for good measure. Depending on the type of job you’re seeking you may need to bring additional items (for example: artists usually have a portfolio of their work with them). Don’t be a packrat, but demonstrate professionalism and preparedness.

What will be expected of me? (number of interviews, nature of the interview, any testing involved, etc.)

Find out as much as possible beforehand. Who are you meeting? How many different people are you meeting? How long will the meetings last? Are there any sorts of aptitude or other testing required?

How do I answer the questions they ask me?

Honestly, to the point, and in a way that demonstrates your value as an employee. You will be evaluated on what you say, how you say it, and how you can relate it to the job you’re applying for. There are some great resources on the web around acing the interview. Here’s a few to get you started: “Successful Interviews” and “A Guide to Successful Interviewing”.

Again, this interviewing is an area where it might pay to hire a career counselor, coach, or trusted friend known to be skilled in the interview process. Role-playing is great. I had a colleague who helped me prepare for an interview a few years back who was great. She asked me tough questions and really coached me on how to answer them in a way that is authentic and leaves a positive impression on the interviewer.

Different questions are aimed to measure different abilities of the prospective employee. Remember that it is expensive for a company to recruit and hire someone. And, any employer worth their mettle knows that it is better to hire the right person and train the skills later than it is to hire someone skilled in one specific thing that can’t function behaviorally. The exception to this might be something like brain surgeon, but even then patient and colleague interactions are almost as important.

To get prepared to answer questions you need to be ready for both the “Common Interview Questions” and the “Weird and Toughest Questions”.

Once you’ve thoroughly prepared, let it go. This isn’t a quiz nor will you receive a grade in the end. Do your best and keep the essence and intent of what is being asked (and what the interview wants to REALLY know) and answer appropriately.

What questions should I ask them?

You want to be prepared with a few questions that demonstrate your knowledge of the company as well as a few that will help you uncover more about the company culture and the hiring manager’s personal style.

One thing I would add to their advice is to ask some questions about the person interviewing you (if they are someone you will either work for or with). For example: tell me what you find most challenging and most rewarding about doing this work? What do you like most/least about this department/company/project? While people will only answer so honestly during an interview, it does give you some sense of what is on their minds. And, if you interview with multiple people you can detect trends.

What should I be looking for as I observe the environment and the people?

You can learn a lot about what is written between the lines by watching others. What are people wearing? Do they look harried or calm? Are they upbeat or somber? Do they look energetic or like they could fall over tomorrow from lack of sleep? What are they wearing? What does the work environment look like? Do people say hello and act friendly? Consider yourself like a private detective trying to solve a crime, be very observant.

How do I demonstrate knowledge of this potential employer?

While you want to demonstrate that you know something about the company and their industry, you don’t want to go overboard. Don’t stump the interviewer. I did that once by asking about something from a recent news article and how that was going to impact his department. He was speechless. I’m still not sure whether that was a positive or negative.

To prepare, do a little reading. Check out the company’s website, do a Google search to find out recent news, and read the local paper. Don’t go wild, but do enough to have a sense of what is going on at the company and what some of its challenges are.

What do I do after the interview to follow up?

First of all, thank you cards are a must. Thank them for your time, reiterate your interest in the position, and restate something that you discussed. You should have asked them what their timing was for decision-making in the interview so you should have a sense of what the next steps are and when they will happen. Keep in mind that oftentimes those timelines slip, so don’t take them too literally. Yet, feel free to follow up with a phone call if you haven’t heard anything. I know I had great success at a previous job when I called to follow up. It gave me a chance to reiterate why I was the right person for the job and it demonstrated my proactive nature.

Receiving the Offer or Rejection

If you receive a rejection (these days sometimes you never hear another word), don’t take it personally. Unless you are experiencing a pattern of seemingly positive interviews followed by a rejection, it is best to just let it go and move on. If you are experiencing a trend, it is time to definitely hire a career professional to help you deconstruct what is going on. It could be something as minor as how you answer certain questions that are holding you back. Or, it could be that you’re marching down the entirely wrong career path and the world is trying to save you heartache. Either way, it helps to work with a coach or counselor to get to the root of the issue.

If you receive an offer — congratulations! You stood out from the crowd! You’re not home free, yet though because now it is time to talk details. All those conversations that you couldn’t have before — about benefits, vacation, salary, etc. are now priority one.

First things first – express your gratitude at receiving this opportunity and express how excited you are to come and work there. Then, gather all the details you possibly can about the position and ask for a chance to consider them in detail, letting them know you’ll do it quickly and get back to them with any questions. Set a date and expectations to touch base again but realize that it pays to sleep on all major decisions.

This is where negotiating comes in.

Negotiating

Unless everything is perfect, more exciting than you could ever imagine, with the offer, you will likely find yourself negotiating. Even if it is a fair offer, negotiating is important to maximize your end of the bargain.

When I was younger I wasn’t one comfortable with negotiating. In fact, the last job I accepted, I was unhappy with the vacation package. It was a step down for me and I was NOT happy. I asked some questions, but ultimately was told “no” with some nebulous excuse. I was advised by a friend to accept the job and then negotiate later once I was in the door. WRONG ANSWER. While you can be successful negotiating once you’re in the door, my vote is to do it up front. Take the time to have meaningful negotiations before you seal the deal. If it seems more appropriate to prove yourself for a few months first, that is fine – set an agreement (in writing) up front that you will reconvene in 3 or 6 months to reopen the discussion. I encourage you to stay strong & get the courage to ask for what you want.

That being said don’t be an ass. If you come to the table being inflexible or uncharacteristically demanding it ends up being a lose-lose for everyone. Remember you always have the power to say “no” to the job offer if you carefully consider the details and determine that it isn’t the right fit for you.

The book “Getting to Yes” is a great guide to win-win negotiating. I listened to the audio book quite a while ago. The point of the book is that negotiating isn’t a battle. It is a conversation in which both parties benefit. If you approach the conversation with the attitude of how can we all benefit, it not only becomes much more productive but also more likely that everyone walks away with what they want.

What if you’d rather eat snails that work for someone else? Stay tuned because in the next part in this series I am going to talk about starting your own business. There is more than one way to earn a living.

A thought that struck me...

Xochial Crash : January 12, 2009 2:51 pm : GLBT Rights, Public Health, Xochial, education, fitness, sexual health

Hey there kiddies,

I was reading an article and there was a comment made by the author that struck a deep cord with me.

Here is the complete article, via Xtra.ca an online zine based in Canada, and it is discussing the world of cruising for sex at and in the gym.

Rules for gym play

SEX PLAY / For that after-workout workout in the locker room

Todd Klinck / National / Tuesday, January 06, 2009

When I first moved to downtown Toronto in 1995, I got a membership at a now defunct Sports Club of Canada location at Sherbourne and Isabella. I was new to working out, and enthusiastic about fitness, but within a couple weeks I noticed that there were men who seemed to spend all their time in the locker room. This parallel cruising universe involved a constant movement from shower to wet steam room, to dry steam room, to whirlpool, and then back to shower. Aficionados of gym cruising will agree — the more types of facilities a gym has, the better the cruising. I was a member at this location for at least a year and it provided my intro to furtive gym encounters.Having a love of casual sex, I had to be disciplined and promised myself that I would always do my full workout before donning my towel and hanging out in the change room. Because that location was particularly sexual it could get distracting — so when I moved away from that neighbourhood, it made sense to me to find another gym. Part of me hoped the next one would be a little more G-rated, so I could stay focussed on my exercise.

I then got a trial membership at the downtown YMCA. In retrospect, that seems silly if I wanted a non-sexual gym. The YMCA is downright historical in gay culture (it even has a gay anthem of its own). Luckily for me, I hated the workout facilities, so I only lasted a couple weeks. I never saw any action there, but from what I read now on Squirt.org, I must have been blind. I then moved to World Gym at Charles and Yonge. That was my favourite gym of all time — the best facilities and enough straight steroidal guys that the cruising had to be extremely discreet (but not non-existent).

And discretion is the key when it comes to gym cruising. Websites like Squirt.org offer detailed cruising summaries of every gym and public restroom in the world, and I think that makes it easy for cruisers to get feelings of entitlement, to forget that other people use these facilities for their original purposes. It’s hard to imagine that the managers of gyms don’t know about these websites — I am sure most of them do. I’m also convinced that some of the designers of gym locker rooms are in on this too. I worked out at one location for a long time, and then they renovated their shower area from scratch. They went from an open concept shower to a row of stalls with curtains. But one of the stalls had a big, unexplainable gap that allowed you to look into the adjacent one. Those two stalls automatically became the cruising stalls. The sauna in the same location had a lightbulb that was always burned out or stolen. It would get replaced, and then get stolen again. Every other gym has hardware screwed into the wall in the sauna protecting the lightbulbs. But this location just let the sauna go dark, which made it more conducive for sex. I find it hard to believe that it wasn’t at least partially deliberate.

I have my own approach to cruising in public places. I don’t want to unwittingly expose gym members to sex. Sometimes I think gays (especially in a big city, in a gym with a high concentration of gays) take things too far. For that reason, I would like to propose a code of conduct for gym cruising:

Rule 1: Never get caught. All of my proposals are related to Rule 1. Because this is one of those victimless crimes. As long as only those who want to know about it know about it, and those who do not, do not, everything should be fine. Keep in mind that gym locker-room action is meant to be subtle, discreet, and non-invasive. Straight guys deserve to take a shower without someone staring directly at their naked bodies while stroking their own cock. Gay guys who prefer to use the steam room for its health purposes deserve to go in the steam room and not be leered at, or be forced to witness guys jerking off. Just because you know someone is gay does not mean they should automatically be included in the action.

Rule 2. Have a lookout. If two guys are in the sauna or steam room jerking off, they should be listening carefully for the footsteps of approaching guests. If a third person is in the room, and is willing to be the lookout, ask them directly to do so.

Rule 3. Don’t cum on the floor. That’s just disgusting. Catch it in your hand, shoot it down someone’s throat, or cum on your towel. I have seen countless guys shoot their loads unapologetically on the floor, or the sauna seats, and then get up and walk away. Gross! Nobody deserves to walk into a steam room and slip on a pile of spunk!

Some people might be horrified that I am discussing this type of sex openly. It is clearly illegal, but I think it is a type of sex that has radical roots. Before gay liberation, public restrooms and bathhouses were amongst the few places gays could hook up. At the risk of violence or arrest, these men were fulfilling their needs. We now have many safe and legal ways to enjoy man-on-man cruising, but the gyms remain a very sexy place for some of us. And that’s a good thing.

This is the line that struck me: “Websites like Squirt.org offer detailed cruising summaries of every gym and public restroom in the world, and I think that makes it easy for cruisers to get feelings of entitlement, to forget that other people use these facilities for their original purposes.”

Now what struck me the most is the comment about how people have a feeling of entitlement. How they feel it is their God Given Right to do what they want, when they want and where they want. While in your own home this is very true. You DO have those rights. However, when you are out in public, you do NOT have these same rights. You have to be cognizant of the rest of the world around you. We have become a society of take now and pay later in just about everything we do. No-one is forced to pay any attention to what they are doing. It has become acceptable to be rude to people just because you can be.

I don’t know about you all, but I am going to try to be nicer to people in 2009 for we all inhabit the same space and it is only going to get smaller. There is one thing that will never change about this planet, there is no new land being created. We have what we have and there is no one making new anymore.

Well, that is all I have for today.

Margie : January 4, 2009 6:13 pm : Drag, Margie, Moisha, Steven Hintz, Xochial, education, podcasts

Last night , as Xochial mentioned in her earlier post, was the year end holiday celebration of the P Team.

The Independent We celebrated at (as you might imagine) The Independent in Uptown Minneapolis.

I believe all who attended had a good time and I left feeling energized as well as accomplished.  It is always fun to gather with those who spurn your creativity and bring additional talent and skills to your work team.  In March 2008 we created Heres-Margie.com and since that time we’ve been able to go live in May of 2008, build out P’s Sexy Sinema in June of that same year and begin our own podcasting as of August 2008.  mrs_pederson_itunes.jpgThe very talented team of contributors (the P Team) who strive to provide a site that is content rich with something for almost anyone over the age of 18, partied together and enjoyed the fruits of our success in what is not yet even a full year of operating.

A very warm and special thanks to the P Team and guests who were at the soiree to help celebrate the first year of amazing accomplishment.  Without each of you we would not still be around.  Because of you – I am looking forward to continuing the development of Heres-Margie and to bringing our readers and listeners more fun, education and community-building opportunities in the year ahead.

A very special thanks to Sam and the Indy for helping me put on such a fantastic party.

I look forward to spending more time with each of you soon.

Love & Peace

Just a little note of how ones thoughts affect others around you...

Xochial Crash : January 1, 2009 12:21 am : Public Health, Xochial, education

Hey all,

I was talking with Margie earlier this evening about the coming New Years soiree that she was going to attend, and she was asking me to join her and some fellow Here’s Margie talent to ring in the New Year. I, however, just was not feeling it. I decided that in the best interest of all around, I should stay home for I was not really in the “Happy New Years” kind of mood and I did not want to infect others with my ho-home attitude.

Now, to Margies credit, she can be quite persuasive, but I stuck to me guns for I knew that if I went out I would spread my funk around, and I did not wish to dampen anyone’s cheer.

Now, while perusing the web, I have proof that my choice for me was accurate and timely.

Moods ‘spread like ripples through friends’ say scientists

Bad moods are contagious and can spread through friends and family across hundreds of miles, according to new research.

Moods 'spread like ripples through friends' say scientists

Moods – good and bad – tended to travel more freely in same-sex groups. Photo: GETTY

How grumpy people feel can be influenced not only by the state of mind of those closest to us, but also by friends of friends that we have never met like ripples from “pebbles thrown into a pond” , claim scientists.

Professor James Fowler of the University of California, said each ‘unhappy connection’ decreased the chance of a person being happy by seven per cent.

However, the effect works both ways with each ‘happy connection’ increasing the chance of a person’s happiness by nine per cent.

The team led by Dr Nicholas Christakis, a sociologist at Harvard Medical School, and including Professor Fowler, made their conclusions after analysing 53,228 social connections between 5,124 individuals over time.

Dr Christakis said: “If you drop one pebble in a pond, it will create ripples out from the pebble.”

He added: “Most people will not be surprised that people with more friends are happier, but what really matters is whether those friends are happy.”

Moods – good and bad – tended to travel more freely in same-sex groups, they report in New Scientist magazine.

They found a happy friend increased the odds of someone being happy by 15 per cent – but that a friend of a friend boosted the chance by about 10 per cent, and a friend of a friend of a friend by about six per cent.

That was triple the two per cent chance of being happier caused by a £3,500 pay rise.

Despite physical proximity, the mood of a cohabiting partner was less than 10 per cent likely to have an effect.

Behaviour including drinking, smoking and even obesity can spread in a similar manner, the team claim.

Last year his team found a person’s risk of gaining weight increased significantly when friends gained weight. If their friends gained weight a similar but lesser effect was evident on the individual.

He said: “Obesity appears to spread through social ties.”

Sceptics may question how a person one has never met can have a direct influence on mood, and ask how the effects of individual friendships can be teased out of a mass of social connections.

Now I can attest to how never meeting someone before, their mood can rub off on you. For if there is a person at my work who has arrived and is in a foul disposition, after a few minutes of interaction with them, I can feel the affects of their foul mood beginning to make me foul.

So, to all you out there who think they are kind of nuts for feeling like they are absorbing others moods, don’t. For it is proven to be true.

I truly hope you all had a safe and happy new years eve.

We wish you and yours nothing but the best in dreams, love and peace for 2009.

Just a quick note...

Margie : December 30, 2008 8:47 pm : Home, Public Health, fitness, podcasts, sexual health

to tell you all that I am very excited about the upcoming New Year!  2009 will be so instrumental in so many things.  The United States of America have elected Barack Obama.  People are communing and organizing over incredible odds: finance, world health issues, worldwide disputes and offense, most importantly (in my eyes) Gay marriage.  But, in spite of it all…  Good folk like Jerry Hughes has an amazing spirit and hope that Mrs. P thinks is FABULOUS!!!!

I am going to go back now and sip another glass of great red wine and discuss all that life is…with none other than the world famous Jerry Hughes.

Tomorrow is the day we begin our journey forward.  Will it be easy?  NO WAY JOSE!  Will we make it?  I think so, I hope so, I pray for it and cast for it… I know this much is true.  It will only be so, if at least 50% plus 1 believe it can happen.  Let’s take time to believe in our future – send out well wishes to someone you’d almost forgotten about – or someone you’ve yet to be introduced to.

Love & Peace

Oh Whatta Dame!?

Margie : December 28, 2008 12:46 pm : Drag, HIV, education

I was out at the cinema with longtime friend Mary Lee yesterday and after sitting through a cinematically stunning film (The Reader) we decided to grab a bite to eat at my favorite restaurant (The Independent in Uptown, Minneapolis).  On the way, Mary decided she needed to pick up a few supplies at the MAC Cosmetic counter and what to my delightfully astonished eyes appeared on the entry into the shop but none other than Dame Edna!!!dame-edna-at-macresized.jpg

That’s right muffins Dame Edna is the muse for the latest and greatest shades of bold and daring color to brighten your appearance.  And just in time too – with the New Year and holiday parties right around the corner a face created with colors from this line is sure to stop the show.  Brava Dame E and MAC for this wonderful collaboration!  As always, MAC should be recognized for their years of giving back to the communities affected by HIV and for stimulating HIV and AIDS awareness globally.

Time to shop until you drop

Margie : December 21, 2008 7:57 pm : Home, education

Hello Muffins:

Like all the rest of America, it is 4 days before that magic evening that has been the benchmark for international commerce for decades.  Christmas!  Although there are plenty of people whom wish to reclaim the sacred roots of the annual celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ (Jesus is the reason for the season) there are plenty of us who wish it were a less commercialized event.  It seems that in difficult economic times we should be concentrating on less materialism and more good will. winter-solstice-stonehenge-circle2.jpg

Today is a somewhat less common phenomena when a single day marks two lesser acknowledged annual remembrances.  Tonight is both Winter Soltice and the first night of Hanukkah.  Winter Solstice is near and dear to my heart and is often unappreciated for the purported influence it had on the early Christian church in the conversion of many pagans from their annual celebration of the light returning.  You see, if a “replacement event” could be created, marketed and widely accepted then there would be less to protest.

I don’t post this to challenge the celebration that has become the biggest single money maker for the free world as much as to say for those seeking a more personal meaning – Happy Solstice!  May the days grow longer and the warmer as we welcome and begin the ascent into Spring.

By the way – I did get my fair share of shopping in over the weekend and will be bringing you news later on a number of great one-of-a-kind specialty stores and items if you are looking for that kind of thing for yourself or someone special in your life.

Blessed Be!

Project 515

Margie : December 18, 2008 5:42 pm : GLBT Rights, education

Hello all

I don’t know about you, but the holiday season is just rushing by.  I am off to yet another social engagement this evening but quickly wanted to tell you to check out the article on Meefers that just went up today.  If you weren’t already familiar with the local organization Project 515 I do hope you take to time to get to know their work.

project515-rally.jpg

Another interesting thing you can do to become involved is to help the State of Minnesota balance their books.  House Speaker, Representative Margaret Anderson Kelliher  is asking people to write in their ideas on how to balance the budget.  How cool is that?

Stay warm and get active.

December Tarot Reading

The Relationship Queen : December 12, 2008 3:37 pm : Home, education

I apologize for this reading being late.  It seems that I just put away the dishes and the leftovers from Thanksgiving, poured myself a glass of wine and while breathing a sigh of relief about surviving the holiday realized December 1st was days ago!

For this month’s reading I pulled Rune stones.  For those not familiar, they are believed to have originated in Scandinavia perhaps as early as 200 BC.  Runes represent an alphabet of sorts but were used as a system of symbols that help to determine how your Skuld, “that which shall be” is affected by your Wyrd, roughly translated as your past which includes not just your personal past but the past of all your ancestors before you.

ty.gifTiwaz (The God Tiw):  The sides of the arrow represent law & order, and self sacrifice, and the main line represents the world column.  In this reading it stands for careful planning and sacrificing.  You have carefully analyzed and reanalyzed all the facts.  Your ducks are now in a row so to speak.

laukr.gifLaguz (Water):  However, now you have to let it go.  Everything is in place, but you have to let it happen.  Literally go with the flow.  If you do not embrace Laguz at this point you run the risk of always planning and never doing.  Sit back and let the plans you have put into place take motion.

giof.gifGebo (Gift):   In the end you will be rewarded if you can pull back enough to allow for some organic action to happen.  If this reading relates to a relationship situation for you there will be a powerful connection if you let things move naturally from this point forward and do not try to control or manipulate the situation.  For business endeavors, they will be financially successful if you step back and let the plans you have put into motion run their course.  Don’t micromanage!
When I pull runes I always pull three plus one.  The last one is what I call the one to meditate on.

wynn.gifWunjo (joy):  How perfect for the season.  It not only means joy but harmony.  I translate it as harmonious joy.  In this reading it translates to balance between planning and letting the universe do its thing.  Some times when things don’t go as planned it is a blessing in disguise.  Recognize all of your blessings.  Seek joy in all you do.  Remember that what you do is not who you are.  Do not lose yourself in your actions.  Follow and celebrate your own light.

Blessed be,

Michelle

R.I.P. - Notorious Bettie Page...

Margie : December 12, 2008 10:26 am : Home, education, sexual health

In terms of people whom I admire, Bettie Page is high on the list.

_45291584_beach_220_ap.jpgYou may ask why? when there are so many others who would appear to have higher aspirations for doing good.  Well, simply put, the reason I admire her is due to the fact that she struck me as a bit of an innocent.  She was a legend and one of the people most influencial in the early mainstreaming of the BDSM & fetish  movements.

Career & Money - Part 5: Landing the Job (Part 1)

Pay It Forward : December 11, 2008 2:26 pm : Steven Hintz, education

Now that you’re clear about what type of career you want (Career & Money – Skill vs Passion), it’s time to get started. In this article I’m going to talk about strategies and resources for landing a job working for someone else. Whether the employer you are seeking is large or small, the overall process is similar. (Note: for the purpose of this article I am going to call all employers “companies”, but the same process can be adapted to working in academia, non-profits, etc.)
As I see it, once you’re clear on what you want, the process breaks down as follows:
1) Research possible employers
2) Prepare your resume
3) Find and apply for potential positions
4) Interview
5) Receive offer/rejection
6) Negotiate
Wrapped around the entire cycle is the process of networking and connecting with others whether online or offline.
I’m not about to tackle this job search process in great detail. People have written volumes on each of these topics. What I will do, however is bring to your attention key points and resources that, based on my experience and research are critical to your success.
The all-time job resource is the book “What Color is Your Parachute” by Richard Nelson Bolles. For years I resisted buying this book, but I must say that it takes a pretty holistic and realistic approach to job hunting. It is well worth your time. It covers all the steps in the job search process and is the perfect companion to any job hunt or career change.
Research Possible Employers
Where might you want to work and why? The first step is to get an idea of what employers exist in your geographical location. If you’re willing to relocate for the right position, consider what area(s) you are willing to relocate to and research those locales as well. While it’s not worth the time to become an expert on every company in your geography, it does pay to put your finger on the pulse of what companies are nearby and the details about those companies. How large/small are they? Where are they located? How many employees work at that location? What industries are prevalent in your area?
Depending on the nature of what you’re looking for, you will either limit your search to a subset of the local companies or expand your search far and wide. For instance, if you know you only want to work in one or two industries, you can limit your search right there. If, however, you know you want a position doing “XYZ” then the type of company doesn’t matter, you can expand your search as you see fit.
While I am one for relying on the Internet for just about everything, this is one of those times that it pays to tap the local library. There is a wealth of information in your local library as well as your county’s information office. You can find information on publicly traded companies in publications like Moody’s or Dun & Bradstreet. The local publications geared toward people moving to the area are a goldmine of information. There is typically a section on the area’s major employers as well as local businesses. This information is great for those job hunting.
As I said earlier, the idea of networking wraps around the whole process. When it comes to research, talk to people. Talk to friends, neighbors, acquaintances, people in the store, recruiters, people at social and business networking meetings, you name it. Not only can you find out insider information on what it is like to work at different companies but you also can find great contacts and job leads. Use this information to pursue informational interviews with people who work where you want to work so you can learn more about the specific jobs and companies that interest you.
I can’t stress enough the power of the informational interview. An informational interview is a short appointment with someone who either works at a company or in a profession you are interested in. You basically sit down with the person for no more than 30 minutes and interview them about their job. Most people will happily share information with you. The key is to remain professional, flexible, courteous, and mindful of taking up as little of their time as possible. If someone declines to have an informational interview with you simply thank them, don’t take it personally, and move on.
Prepare Your Resume
The resume is synonymous with the job hunt. However, it is not the be-all end-all of the process. It is simply a tool that, if done well, will get you an interview. Rarely will a resume get you a job. Think of it as a page or two of paper meant to entice someone to learn more about you (that is, invite you to interview for the job).
My biggest lessons learned with resumes are 1) Do your homework on what works and what doesn’t and 2) Don’t agonize over it forever; Create a working version and move forward with it. You can always tweak it later.
The most important points to remember when building your resume are that:
·    Details matter (no typos, misspellings, etc.)
·    Formatting is important
·    Brevity is rewarded
·    Focus on the benefits to the company when writing your accomplishments (i.e., no one cares that you are a genius Java programmer – what did the project you work on do for the company/customer in terms of saving time/money, creating efficiencies, or increasing revenue?)
Resume writers and consultants are like bunny rabbits. They are everywhere and seem to multiply everyday. However, I do recommend finding someone in the know about the current job market and resume practices to help you. As with hiring any professional, do your due diligence. If you are a do it yourself type, sites like Pongo Resume or The Resume Builder could do the trick. Otherwise, check out resources like Career Journal or About.com to educate yourself. One blog I am particularly fond of is Blue Sky Resumes which offers a lot of great tips and resources.
Once you have a resume, remember to keep it up to date. As someone who has ignored it for years and then suddenly needed one, I can tell you it pays to update it at least yearly. Then, you are always ready to roll if the need arises.
Find and Apply for Potential Positions
Once you have an idea of where you’d like to work and you have a resume to throw your hat in the ring, it is time to find a ring in which to throw it! As I mentioned earlier, networking is the #1 way to find out about job opportunities. Not only do you sometimes get the inside information, but you also have a connection on the inside that can offer up a good word for you. It is less risky for a company to hire someone who comes recommended to them than it is to hire blindly. That is why many companies offer a referral bonus for employees who refer new people.
In the old days, the newspaper classifieds were the #1 thing to review. While there are still some great job sections in the papers, the online world has become the new wild west of job openings. There are millions of sites with job listings. Individual companies post their career opportunities as do industry-specific job sites. Some of the bigger sites are Monster and Yahoo Jobs. The Riley Guide offers a long list of job directories on their site. You may also want to consider things like Career Fairs or Trade Shows and working with a recruiter.
The most important thing to remember is that recruiters work for the companies that hired them, not you. Much like a seller broker in real estate is more interested in selling the property than helping out the buyer, the same holds true for recruiters. It is just one technique to use within your overall job search. And, just like buying a house, don’t let anyone pressure you into tight deadlines to make decisions. You need to feel right about how any position you take.
If you’re looking for LGBT specific or LGBT friendly jobs, consider exploring sites like GayJob.biz, the NALGBTCC Jobs Board, and the HRC Workplace Links.
If this seems a bit overwhelming, that is because it is! Searching for a job can feel like a full time job (and if you’re unemployed plan on structuring your search like a job with set hours and tasks). Yet, due diligence and consistent action is what yields results. In Part II of “Landing the Job” I will cover the next 3 steps in the process: interviewing, receiving the offer/rejection, and negotiating.

Margie

thedailybeast.jpgThe historic elections of 2008 has brought to light again the issue of gay marriage and whether in fact gays and lesbians should have the same civil rights afforded to heterosexual couples. A ballot in California was voted on and passed to amend the state constitution to ban gay marriage even though earlier in the year the state supreme court upheld the rights of gays and lesbians and more than eighteen thousand same sex couples were married. The same ballot was passed in Arizona while Arkansas passed a ballot banning same sex couples from adopting children.

Government, mostly led by the radical Christian right, has been arguing for years the definition of the term eddies-piece.jpgmarriage. “ A union between a man and a woman”, they say. And while I personally tend to agree with that narrow definition of the term “marriage”, shouldn’t gays and lesbians be allowed to form “civil unions” and be allowed the same legal protection under the law as heterosexual couples?

Proponents of the ban would argue that gays and lesbians do not have the same right.

They base their argument on radical religious beliefs that they try, successfully so far, to impart on the rest of society.

Most recent polls and surveys show that American’s overwhelmingly either do not care or are for equal rights for gays and lesbians, and the only reason these measures passed in some states was the dramatic increase in Latino voters who are given misinformation by the Catholic Church.

If you tend to ascribe to the Catholic Church, or any other organized religious views of how the world should be, then why pick and choose the parts that fit into your narrow view and discount others? If you believe that Jesus walked the earth teaching love, acceptance and inclusion, then you cannot logically believe that he meant, except if you are gay or lesbian.

Therefore, the religious aspect of this question should be completely removed from the discussion.

If it were a moral question, then it would depend on your morals. If it is a question of ethics, then personal ethics come into play.  If it is a question of rights for all, then it should be guided by those whose lives are affected and not by government decree or amendment to any state constitution.

Gays and lesbian have been around since the beginning of recorded history, and I believe since the beginning of life on earth. A widely accepted theory is that ten percent of the population is gay and lesbian. If that is true, and I believe it to be, more than 30,000,000 people in this country alone are gay or lesbian. Are they not entitled to the same rights and freedom, guided by law that the rest of the population is afforded?

Are they not entitled to the same civil rights as that of women and other minorities?  I would argue that they are. One only has to look at the history of this country to realize that civil rights are a relatively new concept. It took decades for women and minorities to achieve those rights. And while I firmly believe that gay’s and lesbian’s civil rights will happen, it will only come when radical religious extremists are removed from the equation and its left up to the people to decide how to live the life that God, if you believe there is such a being, gave you to live.

"Undesirable" gay men may have riskier sex

Xochial Crash : December 2, 2008 9:04 pm : education, sexual health

Hey all,

I was reading my fav blog, towleroad.com, and came across an interesting line.5004-3-436x571.jpg

I clicked thru to an very interesting article, albeit very short. It got me to thinking about a lot of my own insecurities and behaviours of friends of mine. It made me think that while it is true, it should not be true. But we do live in a society that puts way too much emphasis on being attractive.

So, read the article and tell me, what do you think? Is this true?

TORONTO, Nov. 28 (UPI) — Gay men who are not considered sexually desirable are more likely to engage in risky sexual behavior, Canadians researchers have found.Researchers at the University of Toronto say homosexual men may also develop psychological problems as a consequence of feeling undesirable.

Adam Isaiah Green interviewed dozens of gay men in Toronto to determine what qualities made some men more sexually desirable than others, and what the consequences of being undesirable might be on mental and physical health.

“I found that young, white, middle-class men are considered much more sexually desirable than men who are racial minorities, over 40 and poor,” Green said in a statement. “I also learned that for gay men, being considered sexually undesirable can have serious health consequences, ranging from psychological issues to risky sexual behavior.”

The study, published in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior, found that undesirable gay men face stigmatization, avoidance and outright rejection, which can lead to depression, anxiety and alcohol abuse. It also highlighted cases whereby undesirable gay men will forgo safe-sex discussion and, in some cases, condom use, in the context of sex with a more attractive partner.

Mrs. Pederson Waffels?

Margie : November 30, 2008 10:03 am : Home, education

Muffins:

Although I wrote this post some time ago and never put it up, I still like it and am sharing it with you today so I can lay on the couch eating bon bons ;)

This has been an interesting  morning of food, friendship, laughter and wafels, waffels and of course the ubiquitous American version (Waffles) “leggo my Eggo!”

Waffling on breakfast? Serve Eggo!Anwho, here is the way the morning went down and you had best pay some close attention because Margie is going to give you a whole lot of info in a single fell swoop.

The swath we covered is similar to a patchwork quilt when gazing upon it from a distance.  We started with the desire to stay in and have a home cooked breakfast.  Well it had been a couple years now since I last heated up the Belgian Waffler so I suggested it.  You know – the crisp autumn days lend themselves nicely as the stage for a hearty breakfast and a late morning nap.  I found the waffler but not the accompanying cookbook.  Kristine went to the Internet to source out a fabulous new recipe for waffles that turned out as fluffy as the first new snow.  The recipe was the first one for waffles I had even encountered with vanilla as a key ingredient.  They were delish!

I also had been given some green tomatoes from my dear friends Dave & Josh yesterday and I had never actually made them fried before so we also did up martha_stewart_speaks_03.jpga plate of them.  I was delighted by the crunchy outside and the tart and firm meat of the tomato.  That recipe was so simple I see why the dish has been so popular over the generations.

Here is where the conversation became interesting.   We began discussing the simplicity of food and cooking.  How the best opportunities for conversation seem to exist while preparing food together.  Matthew, Krisitne and I somehow got to the topic of Martha Stewart (or… I brought her up).  I stated that I waffle on my feelings toward the self-proclaimed domestic diva, Our Miss Martha.  She, herself, started out basic and met the needs of many American housewives (not to mention aspiring homosexuals).

Well, that is when Matthew chimed in with “what does waffling mean with regard to indecisiveness?”  In other words what is the etymology?  I remembered that just yesterday while driving back from Fridley – don’t ask – I was listening to a re-run of Lori & Julia.  Lori & Julia are local radio talk show divas and they were discussing a recent event they had attended (like Bingo-a-Go-Go).  They brought up a delightful new text based service called Cha Cha.  It is really cool.  You need to impress a friend or you simply cannot remember the name of the band that sings the song you just heard on the radio, stuff like that.  You simply write a text message the send it to Cha Cha(242242) or call it in to 1-800-2chacha.  We texted the question of where the word waffling got its start.  Within 2 minutes the answer arrived back on Matthews phone!  And the service is FREE.

No more waffling here, from now on if I am ever wondering the answer of some obscure question I will simply Cha Cha.  But not today.  Today it’s bon bons.

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and are getting through your dishes and leftovers.

Love,

Margie

The ERA of Big Brother is closer than you think...

Xochial Crash : November 24, 2008 11:25 pm : GLBT Rights, GLBT Youth, HIV, education, sexual health

This just in: Indonesia wants to micro-chip PWA(People With Aids)!!!

SCARY!!!

(Jakarta) Lawmakers in Indonesia’s remote province of Papua have thrown their support behind a controversial bill requiring some HIV/AIDS patients to be implanted with microchips – part of extreme efforts to monitor the disease.

Health workers and rights activists sharply criticized the plan Monday. But legislator John Manangsang said by implanting small computer chips beneath the skin of “sexually aggressive” patients, authorities would be in a better position to identify, track and ultimately punish those who deliberately infect others with up to six months in jail or a $5,000 fine.

The technical and practical details still need to be hammered out, he and others said, but the proposed legislation has received full backing from the provincial parliament and, if it gets a majority vote as expected, will be enacted next month.

Indonesia is the world’s fourth most populous country and has one of Asia’s fastest growing HIV rates, with up to 290,000 infections out of 235 million people, fueled mainly by intravenous drug users and prostitution.

But Papua, the country’s easternmost and poorest province, has been hardest hit. Its case rate of almost 61 per 100,000 is 15 times the national average, according to internationally funded research, which blames lack of knowledge about sexually transmitted diseases.

“The health situation is extraordinary, so we have to take extraordinary action,” said another lawmaker, Weynand Watari, who envisions radio frequency identification tags like those used to track everything from cattle to luggage.

A committee would be created to determine who should be fitted with chips and to monitor patients’ behavior, but it remains unclear who would be on it and how they would carry out their work, lawmakers said Monday.

Health workers and rights activists called the plan “abhorrent.”

“People with AIDS aren’t animals; we have to respect their rights,” said Tahi Ganyang Butarbutar, a prominent activist in Papua.

He said the best way to tackle the epidemic was through increased spending on sexual education and condom use.

I don’t know about you kiddies, but the moment, THE MOMENT!! someone in this country proposes this, I am out of here.

Career & Money - Part 4A: Skills vs. Passion

Pay It Forward : November 24, 2008 1:00 am : Home, Steven Hintz, education

As I’ve been thinking about Career & Money Part 4 – Discover Your Ideal Career I decided I needed to share a bit of an addendum to the article. While I helped you to hone in on values, I thought a short distinction around skills versus passions would be worthwhile.
The way the process works for most people is that they discover they have a skill and then they build their career around it. For instance, you find that you’re very good at math and numbers in high school. You’re not really sure what you’re passionate about, but you know you excel with this skill. So, you find yourself in college and are faced with having to declare a major course of study. Again, you’re still not sure what options are REALLY out there and your passions are not yet clear. After all, even if you procrastinate, you’re still forced to declare a major by the time you’re in your late teens or early 20’s. You know you’ve always been good at math and it seems like an employable skill, so you opt for a numbers based degree (math, accounting, finance, engineering, etc.). In this example you are SKILLED at math.
Take another example. You are absolutely passionate about science. You are cuckoo for biology. All your spare time is spent doing science type things. You may or may not be actually skilled in science, but it makes your heart beat faster. In this example you are PASSIONATE about science.
The difference between skills and passion is often ignored until you find yourself in a job you could be good at but are totally bored to tears with and you wonder what happened to passion. Or, you absolutely love what you do but either aren’t very talented at it or find you can’t earn the living you desire doing it.
The key is looking at skills and passion as an equation. Consider the following chart:

In an ideal career, you find yourself in Quadrant 1 where you’re not only passionate about what you do, you’re damn good at it. This is where you have the most potential for success because your heart AND your talent is at its peak.
Many people find themselves in Quadrant 3 where you’re skilled at something, but your heart couldn’t be less interested. You find yourself living a daily grind filled with frustration or boredom. While you may experience some success in this scenario, you will always be held back by your lack of interest and passion. The only real exception to this is if you consciously choose to have just a “job” (Career & Money Part 2) in this Quadrant so you can fuel your passions elsewhere.
In Quadrant 2 you find yourself passionate about what you’re doing, but not particularly skilled at it. Again, you may have some success because you are inspired, hard working, and really engaged. However, your lack of skill holds you back. If you can improve your skills (which may or may not be possible) you could start the movement toward the Quadrant 1 ideal. Or, you may find at some point that the activity makes a great part-time endeavor or hobby, but your lack of skill leaves you at a dead end.
Quadrant 4 is the career from hell. You not only don’t care one bit about what you’re doing, you’re not good at it either. It results in utter misery and sets you up for failure. Inevitably your attitude and/or incompetence will get the best of you.
Ask yourself the following questions:
·    If you are currently in a career, what quadrant does it fall in?
·    Where do you want to be in terms of your career?
·    What adjustments might you need to make to shift into the quadrant you most desire?
As promised, Part 5 will start to delve into how to land the best job for you.

The Safe Sex Pill...

Xochial Crash : November 23, 2008 9:03 pm : GLBT Rights, HIV, education, sexual health

Hi all,

I have heard about this pill you can take to prevent infection of HIV.

I don’t know if I am happy about this, or scared for my life.

There are some clinical pre-trials going on that are using the post-exposure HAART(Highly Active Anti-Retroviral Treatment) treatments to see if, taken before un-safe sex, they prevent the passage of the HIV virus.  While on some level this bodes well, it also bodes ill.

In the past few years there has been a sharp increase of HIV infection among younger men who have sex with men.  I blame many “influences” for this increase. First, I blame the drug companies for promoting pill popping as a way of “curing” all ills.  Second, I blame the advertisers who have made pill popping glamorous. “Take a pills, and live a long and healthy life. No side effects.” Bull-shit! I have personally seen people who take one HIV med, and have to take 5 others just to counteract the side-affects of that one HIV pill. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to have to take lots of pills just to be able to “look” healthy. Then there is the unseen affects that all the pills have. Dementia just being the most insidious one. Just think of Alzheimer’s, on speed. Most people I know who are affected by dementia are unaware that they have developed it.

Here is an article from pinknews.co.uk that discusses the trials:

An antiretroviral treatment undergoing trials could reduce the risk of HIV infection, but reports of a new wonder drug are far off the mark, according to leading sexual health charities.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, significantly reduces the chance of infection, but there is already concern that it could be viewed as an end to the need to use condoms.

The drugs are already used to treat HIV+ people in the form of highly antiretroviral therapy (HAART) where they inhibit the virus and prevent the onset of AIDS.

“There’s a lot of buzz about PrEP,” Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the US National Institutes of Health, told the New Scientist.

“There’s some cautious optimism that this will work.”

Sexual health charities are also cautious.

Lisa Power, Corporate Head of Policy for Terrence Higgins Trust told PinkNews.co.uk:

“It’s important to know that recent reports about human trials on the ‘a pill to protect against HIV’ are still underway.

“Results aren’t expected until 2009 and 2010, so it’s too early to know if they will work.

“Even if the trials are successful, these pills won’t be a replacement for condoms. Condoms are still the easiest and most effective way to protect yourself from HIV and there’s no sign this will change in the near future.”

Joe Murray, Policy Officer at the National AIDS Trust, said there were unanswered questions.

“Scientists are researching many ways to prevent HIV,” he told PinkNews.co.uk.

“PrEP, which is effectively antiretroviral treatment taken to reduce the risk of HIV infection, is one of the most promising new prevention tools being looked at.

“However there are still many questions unanswered – who would take the treatment, how regularly, how will the PrEP affect people’s treatment options if they do end up getting HIV?

“So while advances in trials are promising it may be a long time before anything becomes available.

“Condoms are still the best way to protect against HIV when having sex, PrEP would not change that.”

As always kiddies, comment comment and comment. I want to hear what you have to say on this. Would any of you take these pills? Have any of you taken any thing like this?

Once You Go BLACKLE - You'll Never Go Backle!

Margie : November 23, 2008 9:10 am : Home, Margie, education

Blackle is the relatively new innovation by our friends at Heap Media.  It is a search engine that requires the use of far less energy therefore making your hours of Internet searching a greener experience.  It also is something that Google has helped to promote (that is where I first heard about the new search tool).

november-08.jpg

Here’s what the Blackle sight says about why is saves energy.

“Blackle was created by Heap Media to remind us all of the need to take small steps in our everyday lives to save energy. Blackle searches are powered by Google Custom Search.
Blackle saves energy because the screen is predominantly black. “Image displayed is primarily a function of the user’s color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen.” Roberson et al, 2002″

Small steps each day is a “good thing” Don’t you agree Martha?

Margie is off to the races again today – filming a segment and shopping for the bird.  So much for conserving my own energy eh?  LOL Hope you all have a happy day and look for my post on the new NSGRA royalty later this evening.

A bit more on President-Elect Obama

Xochial Crash : November 19, 2008 8:06 pm : GLBT Rights, HIV, Xochial, education

I was reading an article that gives even more info than what I posted about earlier this week about President-Elect Obamas’ plans for GLBT Rights.

I found this at 365gay.com.

(Washington) President-elect Barack Obama has laid out his commitment to LGBT civil rights in an eight-point plan posted on his transition Web site.

It calls for passage of the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Act; a gender-inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act; repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell; repeal of the federal Defense of Marriage Act; opposition to any attempt to reintroduce an amendment to the Constitution to ban same-sex marriage, support for inclusive adoption rights; and an expanded war on HIV/AIDS. The program is identical to Obama’s positions during the campaign and LGBT rights groups said it shows that the president-elect is committed to keeping his word. The Matthew Shepard Hate Crime Act would add sexual orientation to the list of categories covered under federal hate crime law. It passed the House in 2007 and the White House threatened to veto it. In an effort to get around a veto, the Senate version was tied to the 2008 defense authorization bill.  It passed but then went to conference, where it was stripped out.

Obama was a co-sponsor of the bill. On his transition Web site, Obama notes that in 2004, crimes against LGBT Americans constituted the third-highest category of hate crime reported, making up more than 15 percent. As a state senator in Illinois, Obama helped pass tough legislation that made hate crimes  – and cthe onspiracy to commit them -  against the law.

Obama, in his eight-point plan, also supports the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, and says it must include gender identity.

ENDA passed the US House in 2007 without protections for the transgendered, but was not taken up by the Senate.

The legislation would make it illegal for employers to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation in hiring, firing, promoting or paying an employee.

ENDA as originally introduced by Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass) included transpeople, but Frank removed those protections in committee, saying it would be impossible to pass the bill if it included gender identity.

More than a dozen LGBT groups immediately distanced themselves from the legislation. Frank has since said he would fight to ensure an inclusive ENDA is passed.

Obama’s support for an inclusive ENDA virtually assures it will include gender identity when it is reintroduced in the next session of Congress.

“While an increasing number of employers have extended benefits to their employees’ domestic partners, discrimination based on sexual orientation in the workplace occurs with no federal legal remedy,” Obama says on the transition site.

Legislation to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” the ban on gays serving openly in the military, was taken up in committee this year for the first time, but did not make it to a vote.

DADT was enacted in 1993. Since then more than 12,000 servicemembers have been dismissed when it was learned they are gay.  According to statistics from the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, which advocates for gays in the military, an average of two service members each day are dismissed under the law .

“The key test for military service should be patriotism, a sense of duty, and a willingness to serve. Discrimination should be prohibited,” the Obama transition site says.

“Obama will work with military leaders to repeal the current policy and ensure it helps accomplish our national defense goals.”

The Web site also touts Obama’s commitment to same-sex families, but he remains reluctant to support gay marriage.

“Barack Obama supports full civil unions that give same-sex couples legal rights and privileges equal to those of married couples.” the transition site says.

“Obama also believes we need to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and enact legislation that would ensure that the 1,100+ federal legal rights and benefits currently provided on the basis of marital status are extended to same-sex couples in civil unions and other legally-recognized unions. These rights and benefits include the right to assist a loved one in times of emergency, the right to equal health insurance and other employment benefits, and property rights,” the Web site says.

He also supports adoption rights for all couples “regardless of their sexual orientation.”

Obama’s plan also offers a comprehensive plan for combating HIV/AIDS.

“In the first year of his presidency, Barack Obama will develop and begin to implement a comprehensive national HIV/AIDS strategy that includes all federal agencies. The strategy will be designed to reduce HIV infections, increase access to care and reduce HIV-related health disparities,” the Web site says.

Part of that plan would see a diminished role for the Bush administration’s dependence on abstinence education, as well as distributing contraceptives in prisons and lifting the federal ban on needle exchanges.

I am even more excited by the prospect of his point of diminishing the very unsuccessful Bush stance on abstinence only sex ed in school. If that were a truly workable way of teaching, then I don’t think Gov. Palin’s daughter would have gotten pregnant. If it really worked as well as the right-wing dip-shits say it does, THAT would not have happened. She would have been smart enough to know that if you stick a prick in your pie hole, and let it shoot there, your 95% guaranteed to get pregnant. But then again, what the hell do I know.

Anywho kiddies,

Keeping an Eye on the Incoming President...

Xochial Crash : November 18, 2008 8:55 am : GLBT Rights, GLBT Youth, Home, Xochial, education

Hi all, I was trolling around the web today and stumbled upon this website: www.change.gov.

I have excerpted the part that hits me the hardest personally: GLBT Rights.

Support for the LGBT Community

“While we have come a long way since the Stonewall riots in 1969, we still have a lot of work to do. Too often, the issue of LGBT rights is exploited by those seeking to divide us. But at its core, this issue is about who we are as Americans. It’s about whether this nation is going to live up to its founding promise of equality by treating all its citizens with dignity and respect.” – Barack Obama, June 1, 2007

The Obama-Biden Plan

  • Expand Hate Crimes Statutes: In 2004, crimes against LGBT Americans constituted the third-highest category of hate crime reported and made up more than 15 percent of such crimes. Barack Obama cosponsored legislation that would expand federal jurisdiction to include violent hate crimes perpetrated because of race, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, or physical disability. As a state senator, Obama passed tough legislation that made hate crimes and conspiracy to commit them against the law.
  • Fight Workplace Discrimination: Barack Obama supports the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, and believes that our anti-discrimination employment laws should be expanded to include sexual orientation and gender identity. While an increasing number of employers have extended benefits to their employees’ domestic partners, discrimination based on sexual orientation in the workplace occurs with no federal legal remedy. Obama also sponsored legislation in the Illinois State Senate that would ban employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.
  • Support Full Civil Unions and Federal Rights for LGBT Couples: Barack Obama supports full civil unions that give same-sex couples legal rights and privileges equal to those of married couples. Obama also believes we need to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and enact legislation that would ensure that the 1,100+ federal legal rights and benefits currently provided on the basis of marital status are extended to same-sex couples in civil unions and other legally-recognized unions. These rights and benefits include the right to assist a loved one in times of emergency, the right to equal health insurance and other employment benefits, and property rights.
  • Oppose a Constitutional Ban on Same-Sex Marriage: Barack Obama voted against the Federal Marriage Amendment in 2006 which would have defined marriage as between a man and a woman and prevented judicial extension of marriage-like rights to same-sex or other unmarried couples.
  • Repeal Don’t Ask-Don’t Tell: Barack Obama agrees with former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff John Shalikashvili and other military experts that we need to repeal the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. The key test for military service should be patriotism, a sense of duty, and a willingness to serve. Discrimination should be prohibited. The U.S. government has spent millions of dollars replacing troops kicked out of the military because of their sexual orientation. Additionally, more than 300 language experts have been fired under this policy, including more than 50 who are fluent in Arabic. Obama will work with military leaders to repeal the current policy and ensure it helps accomplish our national defense goals.
  • Expand Adoption Rights: Barack Obama believes that we must ensure adoption rights for all couples and individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation. He thinks that a child will benefit from a healthy and loving home, whether the parents are gay or not.
  • Promote AIDS Prevention: In the first year of his presidency, Barack Obama will develop and begin to implement a comprehensive national HIV/AIDS strategy that includes all federal agencies. The strategy will be designed to reduce HIV infections, increase access to care and reduce HIV-related health disparities. Obama will support common sense approaches including age-appropriate sex education that includes information about contraception, combating infection within our prison population through education and contraception, and distributing contraceptives through our public health system. Obama also supports lifting the federal ban on needle exchange, which could dramatically reduce rates of infection among drug users. Obama has also been willing to confront the stigma — too often tied to homophobia — that continues to surround HIV/AIDS. He will continue to speak out on this issue as president.
  • Empower Women to Prevent HIV/AIDS: In the United States, the percentage of women diagnosed with AIDS has quadrupled over the last 20 years. Today, women account for more than one quarter of all new HIV/AIDS diagnoses. Barack Obama introduced the Microbicide Development Act, which will accelerate the development of products that empower women in the battle against AIDS. Microbicides are a class of products currently under development that women apply topically to prevent transmission of HIV and other infections.

This by no means is his entire agenda, but it is what is most important to me. I hope you all will take sometime out of your day to go this site and read, learn, about what our incoming presidents plans for our future are. I know for me, I am hopeful for the next four years. I am tired all the gloom and doom that has been bandied about for the last 8 years and look forward to happier days ahead.

So you wanna bareback...here's opinions regarding what to do and most importantly what NOT to do!

Bad Chad BS : November 16, 2008 6:14 pm : HIV, Home, Public Health, education, sexual health

Disclaimer:

Hello Muffins! This is not my own posting. This is the first posting by the newest P Team member: Bad Chad BS. He is nothing if not opinionated and I certainly do not want to squelch that energy. I have intentionally gone light on editing (Matthew can take on that challenge). Please read with the understanding that I value individual opinions and welcome differences of them. That said, I hope you will read and comment on this very important post!

phd.gifA Dutch court sentenced two men this past week for intentionally infecting 14 victims with HIV. Hats-off to the Dutch court. What is so bizarre about this story is that the two men convicted weren’t just trying to poz these men (I’m assuming they are all men) with their own tainted love juice through bareback sex. They were making certain the odds of their victims becoming HIV positive were maximized by using syringes filled with HIV infected blood. The article also states that the victims were given the “date rape drug“, GHB.

WOW, what a story!  I’m not quite sure where to begin a commentary. Should I focus on barebacking, participating in gay sex orgies, drug use, rape? Sheesh! Some people’s kids are making it so hard these days to have a simple opinion regarding their actions.

My opinion is probably the best place to begin. Stating that what I will write about on heres-margie.com are my opinions, regardless of how much logic and scientific fact I drum up to support my writings…they are my opinions. I do want to write about barebacking at some point in this article, as the title suggests, but it will take a few paragraphs to get there. Please be patient and continue reading.

First a little background about me. I am a 36 year old gay white male. I have been out since I was 21, so that’s 15 years if I do the new math correctly. I was born, raised and educated in the metro areas of Minnesota and I currently live in Saint Paul, Minnesota. The specifics of my post-secondary education are a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, Institute of Technology. And yes, I never get tired of saying that sentence :). My education’s areas of emphasis include: Chemistry (duh!), Mathematics, Computer Science, a few Engineering courses and a senior-level course in Immunology. So yeah, I’m smart. Actually, I’m just good at math so rigorous scientific studies were an option for me. Oh, and many of you will say that I’m not all that smart once you get to know me and learn about some of my opinions. And that is OK because I am also a realist.

So, to start off, I can ask the question why these two men were doing what they were doing? Specifically, intentionally attempting to infect people with HIV. Answer, they are sick criminals and should be in prison. No one has the right to infect someone with HIV even if they request it. That is just NUTS! If you have HIV, (and know first hand the way it changes your entire life), you have no right to pass that on to someone.

OK, so maybe you are wondering what my HIV status is at this time. Since I have opinions about HIV and barebacking I will reveal my status to you. My last HIV test result was negative. That was as of July 2007. The one before that was also negative. That one was January of 2007. I have not been tested for HIV since my last test. In total, I have been tested for HIV I think at least a dozen times.  If you are poz and reading this you are probably saying “Well that was easy since you are negative.” and you’re absolutely right. Would I be so willing to disclose my status if I ever become poz? I hope so! At minimum I MUST disclose this to the men with whom I engage with in sexual activity. Don’t agree? I don’t care. This is my opinion. I know a few guys who are poz and in relationships with men and YES their partners know their HIV status. What awesome role models these strong gay men are to all of us!

OK, back to the story. What was really going on here in this crazy intentional HIV infection scenario? Was this a conversion party? Were these bug chasers? Were all these men that were intentionally injected with HIV tainted blood already HIV positive? Gosh, who knows? What I can state with much certainty is that, aside from all the syringe action going on at that Dutch social, there was probably a whole lotta un-gloved love taking place. Simply stated, barebacking. To me, barebacking is engaging in sexual activity without the use of condoms or some kind of latex barrier. If you think barebacking is only anal or vaginal penetration without a condom think again. Putting your genitals inside of some-one’s mouth is penetration. So, if you are doing a lot of sucky-sucky or licky-licky without using some form of a latex barrier, in my opinion, you are barebacking! Didn’t think you barebacked? Think again. ALL of us who have sex are probably barebacking. When was the last time you licked a condom? Gross! So, the topic that I really want to address in this article is how to engage in safer barebacking. Sounds like a contradiction but it’s not. We’re all doing it so we absolutely should talk about it and come to some agreement on what is high-risk barebacking and what is NOT high-risk barebacking.

First off, there is no safe-sex. There are only levels of safer sex. I will vehemently defend the following statement; Engaging in sex with a stranger, even while using condoms, is orders of magnitude more risky than engaging in sex without the use of condoms with someone you know WELL. How can this be you ask? First, you may know the sexual history of the person you know well. Specifically, how many partners they have in a given period of time. You may know first hand when they were last tested and how often they are tested for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). You may know how they feel about themselves, meaning do they care about their own health? You may know if they care about you and your health. You may know if they use and/or abuse drugs. You may know many things about a person you know well that will help you decide if you should engage in bareback sexual activity with them. The other side of the coin is that you can know only one thing for certain about a stranger, and that is…you DON’T know them. If two people DO NOT have HIV, no matter how much bareback sex they have with each other, they CANNOT give each other HIV. Read that sentence again. If you don’t understand it, read it again and again and again until you do understand it. It’s important and can help you reach the point where you can engage in safer bareback sex.

The reality that I see today is that most people want to have bareback sex. Again, that is sex without the use of condoms or some kind of latex barrier. I hear a variety of reasons from latex tastes bad, to I don’t like the way condoms feel inside my body, to I can’t stay erect if I wear a condom, to I am part of a low-risk group for HIV infection. These are valid reasons for people not wanting to or simply not using condoms or latex barriers. They are valid because it is the way that the individual feels and we should not judge consenting adults for how they want to express their sexuality. Instead, we should be getting off the cross to provide and advocate to anyone who engages in bareback sex how to practice SAFER bareback sex.

So, here are some things to think about before you engage in bareback sex with your partner.

1. Do NOT engage in bareback sex with strangers. This is the highest risk for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.

2. Get to know your potential bareback sex partner for a long time, at least one year, before you engage in bareback sex with them. I don’t come to you with any statistics regarding what is the appropriate length of time to know someone before you make the decision to engage in bareback sexual activity with them. Some of you may think you know someone in three months and it is OK to bareback with them. Some of us may be in a person’s life for five years and still feel that we really don’t know that person. I state a year because I feel that is the absolute minimum amount of time you should get to know someone before you engage in bareback sexual activity with them.

3. Do NOT engage in bareback sex with someone who does not care about your health.

4. More importantly, do NOT engage in bareback sex with someone who does not care about their own health.

5. Limit your bareback sex to only one partner. You do not have to be monogamous to have a monogamous bareback sex partner.

6. Get tested regularly for STIs if you engage in ANY sexual activity, bareback or not, and provide full disclosure of your test results to those with whom you engage with in sexual activity.

7. Go to the testing facility with your potential bareback sex partner and be in the room together with the health professional when the test results for ALL STIs are revealed. If you want to build trust with someone this kind of full disclosure is a non-issue. If a potential bareback sex partner whines to you and states, “Oh, so you don’t trust me?” the answer should be absolutely not. It is in these kinds of moments that we build trust.

8. Be constantly communicating with your bareback sex partner. Continue to know them well and be aware of any changes in their behavior that could be a sign you should disengage, either temporarily or permanently, in bareback sexual activity with them.

Well, I hope that my opinions regarding bareback sex gives those of you reading this post some things to ponder. I believe for many reasons that anyone who is HIV positive has the responsibility to do everything they can to NOT infect someone who is HIV negative. I also believe for many reasons that anyone who is HIV negative has the responsibility to do everything they can to stay HIV negative. And, for the record, that absolutely 100 percent does not mean that someone who is HIV negative cannot engage in sexual activity with someone who is HIV positive. For me, it simply means that in that kind of scenario, there shouldn’t be any bareback sexual activity taking place. And yes, I know I have engaged in sexual activity with men who are HIV positive. For two reasons I know this to be FACT. One is the sheer number of partners that I have had in my life. Two, I found out at a later time the positive status of some of the men with whom I have engaged with in sexual activity.

Most things we do everyday are a risk. Driving our cars, getting on a plane, experimenting with drugs, loving someone, and on and on. This article is my opinion about we can reduce our risk of sexually transmitted infections, primarily HIV, if we choose to engage in bareback sexual activity. Care about yourself, care about your partner and most importantly…love life. Life is truly a gift.

19 Bartender Mugged on the Way to Work

Moisha : November 14, 2008 2:21 pm : Home, education

Mugged and had his wallet and cell taken.  Poor guy.  They didn’t take his laptop though.

But again a shame, for such a nice guy in “the gayborhood”.

Times may be bad, but taking it out on others is shameful.

Hoping for good news next time to report,

Wishing you the best,

Mrs. Moisha

Career & Money - Part 4: Discover Your Ideal Career

Pay It Forward : November 11, 2008 7:37 pm : Steven Hintz, education

In Part 3 I talked about how to discover your values and gauge the type of money you’ll need to earn for the lifestyle you desire. In this installment of the Career & Money series I want to talk about finding the right fit and the myriad of ways you can earn money.

Now that you’ve discovered your values you should be starting to get a sense of what is important to you in terms of your life plan and your career plan. As I’ve shared before, it is crucial to have these be in alignment.

When it comes to finding the right fit for your career you need to not only take into account what your values are but also your preferences. This is where knowing yourself pays dividends. You learn at the core who you are, what you want, and what you truly do not want from your days on the planet. This relates to your work life in a number of ways. Ask yourself this:   “If I am to feel alive and thrive in my career, how would I answer the following questions?”

  • Do I want to work for someone else or for myself?
  • What type of employer would I like to work for? (For profit, non-profit, academic, government, start-up, etc.)
  • How large or small of a company would I like to work for?
  • Am I a strong, self-directed person or do I like a lot of direction?
  • Do I love to lead or prefer to follow?
  • What type of work culture do I enjoy? (Conservative, cutting edge, open, hip, old school) How do people treat one another and how well do they walk their talk?
  • How supportive is my employer of my sexual orientation? Do they have policies in place?
  • What type of physical environment do I work best in? (Albeit, I’ve yet to find a soul who loves a cubicle, there are many who feel right at home there.)
  • What skills and talents do you want to use in your job? ie: Do you prefer mental or physical work? Like working with your hands or on a computer? Love to interact with people or prefer solitude? Teams or independent projects?
  • What industry might I want to work in? (Retail, electronics, pharmaceuticals, health care, software, etc.)

As you answer these questions keep on writing about what your ideal situation looks like. Tap into the feelings behind why you answer the way you do. How strongly do you feel about your answers? For instance, you might absolutely feel 100% strongly that you want to work with people yet the industry you work in doesn’t matter quite as much. Take note of this so you can dissect your answers to arrive at a list of attributes for the career you most desire. On this list consider having 3 categories:

  • “Must Have’s” -The non-negotiable attributes
  • “Like-to-have’s” - Items that you are willing to negotiate or at least have
    intermittently throughout your career
  • “Neutral” - You really have no preference

As you make your list don’t shortchange, second guess yourself, or start making compromises. I can tell you now that your mind will try to rationalize your heart’s wishes to fit some preconceived beli
