Busy and productive day as usual.  As the summer concludes and the business of Back To School and holiday planning begins I find myself in a very reflective mood.  So much has happened in the past year for which I am grateful.  One thing that occurred was the collaboration between Heres-Margie and My Scene City to bring you Mrs. Pederson’s Twin Cities Got Talent.  Justin Scharr, the winner of the talent show, stopped by this afternoon to tell me about the news in his world.  We recorded a very brief podcast to update you all.  Just under ten minutes it is a quick listen and jam packed full of “Good Stuff”!  Thanks for stopping by Justin and congrats on the new directions your life is taking.

Last night I had the fabulous opportunity to chat with Adam Fairbanks and Sue Purchase about Harm Reduction.  They are amazingly compassionate activists who have a discernible point about needle exchange to share.  Not sure what needle exchange is or what Harm Reduction is all about?  Listen to the show and learn more!

I am literally burning the many hours of captured video from the LGBTQ leadership trip that occurred earlier this summer even as I write this.  Next step is to upload and produce the video for all of you to enjoy on TheColu.mn.

Then there is the upcoming recording session of Listener’s Discretion Advised.  Tomorrow much of the original cast plus a few add ons will record a whole batch of new shows for the fall.  Keep posted as we further develop that site and upgrade the original podcast with new content.  We may be entering the dog days of summer but this is no time to be dog tired! Off to get in a quick round of exercise before heading to see Wicked tonight.  Hope this finds you all well and rested and enjoying all the good Minnesota offers us in the summer!

Last Saturday night in the Bolt Underground the Summer Mismatched Games were held. Normally I am ever-so-pleased to be up on the stage as a celebrity but I did have a bit of a headache and my dear Gal Pal Miss Glori Halleluia was in the audience. Wanting to correct the situation of my being under the brights and Glori in the shadows I worked it out with Management to pull the old switch-a-roo! Muffins:

Every once in a while the week will fly by and you will look back wondering where the time evaporated to.  This has been one of those weeks (well months actually)!  Adding back into my routine the activities of biking, weight exercises and walking has taken a toll on my limited availability.  I really appreciate all of the support people have been sending me regarding my weight loss goals and attribute that to my success in achieving my goals. 

Busy though I am, I am happy to say that late last night I was able to get out and enjoy Bingo at the Bolt for a bit.  I need to tell you though that at one point in the evening it looked as though the bingo folk were going to pack it up and call an  early end to the night.  WHY?  Well consider this.  The games are first and foremost designed to be a fundraiser for the very deserving Aliveness Project.  In order for this to occur they need to sell bingo cards!

The big purse happens with game 12 and there is a requirement that in order to be able to play that game you need to have played games 10 – 12 consecutively.  Bingo begins at 9pm and generally is over at about 11pm.  The problem that almost put an end to the event last night was a poor turnout for the early games.  People have been delaying when they arrive to play so that they are there for games 10 – 12 - but this hardly seems fair to the people who put this fun event on for you.  If they don’t make the money to cover the prizes given away by selling cards then why bother?  It ceases being much of a fundraiser doesn’t it?  

You are all pretty smart cookies – er, um MUFFINS!  You get the picture – show up early play all the games and maybe win a prize or two.  The night is fun and the cause is worthy.  I don’t want to sound like your mother but next week don’t show up late for the ball!

I just got done watching the first epsiode of RuPaul’s Drag U on logoonline.com, and well, I am not impressed nor depressed about the concept.  At first glance it looks kind of ok but then it kind of degenerated into the usual drag bitchiness and back stabbing.

I like the idea of a bunch of queens trying to help some frumpy females find their inner drag queens.  Perhaps it was the choice of the first three “Professors” that left me cold as they were Raven, JuJuBee and Ongina.

Raven was up to her usual shady bitchy behavior. JuJuBee was her usual mild and kind meek self, Ongina was her usual bubbly self. In the end it kind of gave me warm fuzzies, but that was more due to the women they chose for this premiere episode.  Three Tom-boys whose lives were either stuck in mens jeans and t-shirts or on the edge of personal collapse.

In the end, of course, there can only be one winner of each show. This week it was a frumpy woman whose marriage was on verge of divorce (she is pictured at left on the right nearest Ongina.). She had all but given up on ever feeling like a girly girl, she claims to have never felt that way in her life. With the help of Miss Ongina, she learned that she is a girl and is worthy of feeling like a girl.

In a perverse kind of way I am glad that Ravens girl did not win, just because Miss Raven seemed to think that she could be so shady and such a bitch.  See, Karma will come around and slap you when you be acting up!!!

So, I will be watching again next week to see if the show gets any better. Maybe this episode was just the shake out run. Who knows.

Although the word is not official, the rumor is out that a local AIDS Service Organization is due to receive a sizable Federal award to upgrade their HIV prevention efforts.  The staffer primarily responsible for the grant submission is Michael Lee who serves as the agency’s volunteer coordinator.  Mr. Lee has been a long time HIV prevention worker in the Twin Cities.  Prior to moving here he lived in Michigan where he attended Michigan State and eventually earned his MSW.  Lee has served on the Community Cooperative Council on HIV and AIDS Prevention (CCCHAP) since 2004. 

The CCCHAP is Minnesota’s Community Planning Group (CPG) which is a federally mandated board that each state accessing federal dollars to provide HIV prevention and AIDS services is required to have in place for oversight of the distribution of funds.  In 2009 the CCCHAP began planning efforts to institute a statewide prevention strategy as it relates to HIV prevention.  TheColu.mn has reported on this effort and will continue to update as news of funding and new developments in the field emerge.  Congratulations to Lee for the positive impact he is having on the community.  For information about the CCCHAP, go to their website by clicking on the logo in this post.  For more information about HIV prevention one very reliable and up to date resource locally is the Minnesota AIDS Project.
